PA agrees to pay released prisoners $10 million per month to cover unpaid release grants; On Abbas’ orders, PA will continue to pay terrorists and their families’ salaries

“The [PLO] Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs, and at its head Minister Issa Karake, yesterday [Nov. 21, 2017] condemned the threats that were directed at [PA] Minister of Finance Shukri Bishara. It said: ‘This behavior deviates from our national tradition and tradition of struggle, and it has no connection to the values and culture of the prisoners and fighters. This is suspicious behavior that obligates the [PA] Security Forces and police to pursue those responsible for it and settle accounts with them.’
The Commission explained that in light of the meetings that were scheduled in advance, in which Minister of Finance Shukri Bishara participated, …understandings were reached and it was agreed to resolve the problems and crises connected to the payment of the released prisoners’ release grants, which stemmed from an absence of financial means, and this is by paying these grants in monthly payments of $10 million.
On the same subject, Director of [PLO] Commission [of Prisoners’ Affairs] Issa Karake expressed his appreciation for the position of the minister of finance and the acting teams, which emphasized the continuation of their support for the prisoners and their just cause, and their opposition to all of the Israeli occupation government’s pressures and policy of extortion and robbery against the PA and against the prisoners, and also the incitement against them and against their social aid.
Minister of Finance Shukri Bishara explained during the meeting that the [PA] government – on the orders and instructions of [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas and [PA] Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah – is continuing to take care of the prisoners and Martyrs (Shahids), and it will not submit to any pressures or extortion because this is a national, moral, and human duty and a duty connected to the struggle. He noted: ‘The prisoners are victims of the occupation and its incessant crimes against the Palestinian people, and we will not abandon them despite all of the pressures that are exerted on [the government] in this matter. It will continue to do everything it can in order to ease their pain, ensure a dignified life for them, and ease the injustice that was caused to their families and the suffering that they have suffered during their time in the occupation’s prison.’
Bishara noted that the government refuses to submit to the pressures, which tie foreign aid to stopping the humanitarian programs to which the government is obligated in order to ease the injustice caused to the members of our people, and especially the prisoners.”
