Supreme Shari’ah Judge, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Shari'ah Justice, and Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “Let us suppose that they [the Jews] say that this land has been promised to them for the last 3,000 years. All right, I agree to 3,000 years, and what about 5,000 years [ago]? We [the Palestinians] were [here] 5,000 years ago. And this is while you [Jews] were here 3,000 years ago, and then you left. You were here for 70 years and then left. However, we have been here for 5,000 years and have not left. Who is more deserving of this land, then? Our right to this land is strong according to explicit statements of the honorable Quran, according to our viewpoint and beliefs, and according to the texts of Prophet [Muhammad’s] honor-inspiring Sunna (i.e., Islamic tradition). The struggle between us is not a religious or historical struggle. We refuse to enter struggles or religious problems with them [the Jews]…
This land is our right, Jerusalem is our Jerusalem, in the honorable Quran it is our Jerusalem, in the Prophet’s Sunna it is our Jerusalem, in our beliefs and in history it is our Jerusalem. The monotheistic Arab Canaanites built Jerusalem 5,000 years ago, even before our lord Ibrahim (i.e., Abraham), arrived. When Almighty Allah mentioned Ibrahim, what did he say? ‘And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds.’ [Sura 21:71, Sahih International] This is a land that is fundamentally blessed. And Ibrahim was brought to it from Iraq and settled in it. Its people, its Canaanite owners, settled him in it. Even the Torah recognizes that this land is the land of the ‘Palestinians’ (the Torah talks of Philistines, a different people –Ed.).…
There is no struggle between us and the Israelis or the Jews, struggle – at least from our side, [no] religious or historical struggle. The struggle with them is a struggle over the occupation. We do not argue with the Jews about different narratives . They can say what they want. We have our narratives and we believe our narratives. We say that the narrative they tell and present is not a correct narrative. We believe that - just as they say that our narrative is not correct. At the moment, if we want to get into narratives, into a struggle between narratives, we will not get anywhere. You have your religion and we have our religion. Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza are Islamic waqf (i.e., an inalienable religious endowment in Islamic law) land that cannot be denigrated and conceded. We cannot allow or agree to it being under sovereignty that is not Muslim sovereignty. This is our narrative and it is part of our religion and part of our faith."
