Palestinian reactions to US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital: “A knife in the back,” “It will bring disgrace and destruction on the region,” “A clash is anticipated”

Headline: “Wall-to-wall Palestinian condemnations of the American slap”
“Fatah Movement Central Committee Secretary Jibril Rajoub said… that the transfer of the [US] embassy proves to us clearly that [US President Donald] Trump’s administration is not objective in its relations with the two sides in the struggle, is not balanced, and does not view Jerusalem as occupied territory…
Palestinian [PLO] Ambassador to Washington [and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Strategic Affairs] Husam Zomlot said that American President Donald Trump’s decision regarding Jerusalem is a knife in the back and a bullet that kills the two-state solution…
The Al-Azhar Institutes in Palestine said: ‘The decision to transfer the American embassy to Jerusalem cannot pass in quiet. It will bring disgrace and destruction on the region, and it is the beginning of the end of the injustice that the US, Israel, and their helpers are causing.’ They emphasized that ‘A clash with the oppressor and oppressors is anticipated for Jerusalem – with all of its men, women, Murabitin (i.e., those carrying out Ribat, religious conflict/war to protect land claimed to be Islamic), and lovers.’”

US recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel - On Dec. 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump gave a speech formally recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and stating that he had instructed the State Department to begin preparations to transfer the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Trump concluded by stating that the US is still fully committed to the peace process in the Middle East. Following his speech, Trump signed the waiver to delay the transfer of the embassy, and apparently will continue to do so until preparations for the transfer have been completed.

The Al-Azhar institutes are schools to prepare students for higher studies at Al-Azhar University, which was established in Gaza by a decree of Yasser Arafat in 1991. The institutes follow the curriculum of the Al-Azhar Institute in Egypt rather than the PA curriculum. Al-Azhar University’s website describes it as independent, but the PA has some control as is shown by the fact that PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas appointed Imad Hamato as dean of the institutes.
