District Governor of Jericho and the Jordan Valley Majed Al-Fatiani: “What is necessary [for the hunger striking prisoners] is general Palestinian enlistment in all areas throughout the homeland – in our villages, in our refugee camps. I say to all members of our people: This is not the time to take pictures in front of the tents [of solidarity with the prisoners]. This is the time to directly pressure the Israeli government by putting pressure on the lives of the Israelis. We do not want to kill or injure anyone. We want to convey a message of truth and equality for our heroic prisoners. Just as our heroic prisoners are living lives threatened by slow death, you Israelis need to know that you will not live enjoyable and easy lives while you are enjoying our land, our air, and under our skies, while you are doing nothing against the extremist right-wing Israeli government.”
Palestinians commemorate Nakba Day on May 15, the day after the establishment of Israel. On May 15, 1948, combined forces from Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq joined local Arab forces in an attempt to eradicate the newly established State of Israel. The Nakba (Arabic = catastrophe) refers to the establishment of Israel, and the subsequent loss of the war, including the killing and displacement of Arab civilians that occurred during the war.
Hunger strike (April-May 2017) Palestinian terrorist prisoners launched a hunger strike on April 17, 2017, which ended on May 27, 2017, after an agreement was reached. While the prisoners had issued a list of demands, reportedly only the demand to have the Red Cross reinstate a second monthly family visit for prisoners was agreed to. Nevertheless, the PA has claimed the development as a victory.
