Jerusalem under assault
Denial of Jewish connection to Jerusalem
Jerusalem under assault
In 2009 the Palestinian Authority has initiated an unprecedented campaign of historical revision and anti-Israel libels concerning Jerusalem, the focal point being the erasure and denial of 3,000 years of Jewish history in Jerusalem.

In addition, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel is acting both to expel Arabs from Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jerusalem libels are designed to evoke religious hatred by portraying Israel and the Jews as a threat to Arabs and Islam.

This section documents the recent intensification of the Palestinian Authority's campaign of distortion, historical revision and hate incitement surrounding Jerusalem.

This cartoon with the caption "Judaization of Jerusalem" shows, from right to left, a sinister-looking Jew first sharing the chair with an Arab and then shoving him off.
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, official PA daily, Feb 24, 2009]
Denial of Jewish connection to Jerusalem
"Jerusalem is the religious, political and spiritual capital of Palestine - the Jews have no right to it," declared senior PA religious official, Dr. Tayseer Al-Tamimi, PA Chief Justice of religious court. Accordingly, any Jewish life and development in Jerusalem is labeled as "Judaization." Jerusalem is presented as an exclusively Muslim and Christian city, with no regard to history or archeology, and even the existence of the Temple being denied.

PA representative at UNESCO: Al-Aqsa Mosque is "intended for Muslim worship alone" and Israeli presence there "defiles the sanctity" of the mosque
Source: Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, July 19, 2016
Headline: “Anastas: Israel’s claims regarding the thwarting of the resolution regarding Jerusalem in the Heritage Committee are false”
“Head of the Palestinian Delegation to the World Heritage Committee [of UNESCO] Mounir Anastas said that Israel is lying to the media and misleading public opinion with its claims that it thwarted the [proposed] resolution of Jordan and Palestine regarding Jerusalem…
Palestinian Commissioner in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) [Anastas] gave thanks for the support of the EU states and all the member states for the proposal submitted by the Arab bloc which protects the use of the name ‘Al-Aqsa Mosque / Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary’ (i.e., Temple Mount) as synonymous names. He demanded that Israel not change the status quo that determines that the Al-Aqsa Mosque / Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary is an Islamic holy site intended for Muslim worship alone, [and said that] the occupation authorities must put an end to the invasions by [Israeli] soldiers or Israeli extremists, as this behavior constitutes a violation that defiles the sanctity and authentic character of the Al-Aqsa Mosque / Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary.”

The PA and its leaders consider all of the Temple Mount an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Therefore they view any presence of Jews on the mount as an "invasion." It should be noted that Jews who visit the Temple Mount only enter some sections of the open areas, and do not enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock.
Palestinian-Jordanian proposal submitted to UNESCO rejects Jewish connection to Temple Mount and claims “the Jews have caused serious damage” to the site
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, July 10, 2016
Headline: “Israeli efforts to thwart the Palestinian-Jordanian proposal that rejects the connection of the Jews to the Al-Aqsa Mosque [plaza] (i.e., the Temple Mount)”
“The [Israeli] Hebrew newspaper Yediot Aharonot reported today, Sunday [July 10, 2016], that Israel is recently investing increased diplomatic efforts in order to thwart the Palestinian-Jordanian proposal, submitted to the United Nations Organization for Education, Science, and Culture (UNESCO), that rejects the connection between the Jews and the Al-Aqsa Mosque [plaza] (i.e., Temple Mount). The proposal emphasizes that the Al-Aqsa Mosque [plaza] and its surroundings are occupied Palestinian land, to which the Jews have caused serious damage.”

The article refers to a Palestinian-Jordanian resolution proposal denying any Jewish connection to the Temple Mount, which was submitted to the United Nations Organization for Education, Science, and Culture (UNESCO) in July 2016.

Lecturer on PA TV: No Jewish holy texts ascribe holiness to Jerusalem, only Islamic texts do so
Source: Official PA TV Live, June 21, 2016
Official PA TV program Palestine in the Quran
Lecturer on Islam at Al Al-Bayt University in Jordan, Bahjat Habashneh: “According to the Jews, the holiest place in the world is the [Foundation] Stone (i.e., on the Temple Mount). But the question arises: Since Allah didn’t bestow it with holiness, where did the holiness come from? There is no text, not in the Talmud, not in the Jewish Bible, not in the Apocrypha, and not in any of the Jewish writings that gives holiness to Jerusalem (False statement. Examples abound in all Jewish texts –Ed.). The source of the sanctity and purity of Jerusalem, and the existence of a mosque in it, are in the Islamic texts.”

Note: “Jerusalem” is mentioned in the Jewish Bible 669 times and “Zion,” another name often used for Jerusalem, appears 154 times, a total of 823 references. The claim that Jerusalem is not called “holy” in Jewish texts is likewise false. Jerusalem was called holy more than a thousand years before Islam was founded. Here is one among numerous examples: “Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city” (Isaiah 52:1).
Jerusalem is not mentioned even once in the Quran.

PA Prime Minister: Jerusalem is Palestinian “eternal capital”, that has “activities of erasure, fabrication, and Judaization being perpetrated in it”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, June 6, 2016
Headline: “Hamdallah warned of the dangerous consequences of what the occupation state is perpetrating in Jerusalem”
“[PA] Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah warned yesterday [June 5, 2016] of the dangerous consequences of what the occupation forces in Jerusalem and the rest of the occupied Palestinian land are perpetrating. Official [PA] Government Spokesman Yusuf Al-Mahmoud announced: ‘The prime minister emphasized that the entire region will not enjoy security, peace, or stability without the return of occupied Jerusalem, and that no Palestinian will agree to any solution, even one that includes the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, if the entire East Jerusalem is not its capital.’ Al-Mahmoud added: ‘The prime minister said that the false ceremonies being held by the occupation authorities under false names and titles cannot hide the terrible truth and the painful memory which are the tragedy of the occupation of our eternal capital, and the activities of erasure, fabrication, and Judaization being perpetrated in it.’”
Jerusalem and the Old City have “absolutely no connection” to the Jews
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 27, 2016
Headline: “The Jewish Festival of ‘Lights’ will not change the identity of Jerusalem”
“Palestinians from occupied Jerusalem expressed their great anger about the event which contains within it an attempt to give the Old City of Jerusalem and its historic walls a Talmudic (i.e., Jewish) character, and especially the Damascus Gate, one of the best known gates of the Old City of Jerusalem, by holding what is called the ‘Festival of Lights,’ during which they project Talmudic symbols on the walls of [the Old City of] Jerusalem and hold dance and song activities, and such...
The Jerusalem activist Muhsin Mughrabi said that the municipality of Jerusalem is the front branch of the occupation authorities, and that it constantly holds events and festivals whose purpose is to give a Talmudic character to the Old City of Jerusalem and its parts. Likewise, he noted that all of these attempts fail because of the true reality of the city, and especially in the Old City which includes the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and cultural and historic treasures to which the Jews have absolutely no connection.”

PA Minister of Religious Affairs: ”The Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs only to the Muslims, no matter how many forgeries and fabrications the occupation state makes”

Headline: “Ida’is: [Muhammad’s] Night Journey and Ascent to Heaven emphasize the Arab [nature] of Jerusalem and its [Palestinian] nature”
“[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Yusuf Ida’is demanded of the Arab and Islamic nations that they defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque, stand determinedly against the settlers’ invasions, and come out against the legal decisions of the Jewish rabbis to Judaize the Al-Aqsa Mosque and defile it with Talmudic (i.e., Jewish) ceremonies. In a radio interview yesterday… Ida’is emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs only to the Muslims, no matter how many forgeries and fabrications the occupation state makes.”

PLO accuses Israel of “invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza and attempts to impose the occupation’s falsified reality and falsify the history and culture of Jerusalem”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 5, 2016
Headline: “The [PLO] Executive Committee decided to immediately implement decisions of the [PLO] Central Council to limit the relations with the occupation”
“The PLO Executive Committee welcomed the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) decision to refuse attempts to falsify history and to emphasize the true and natural Arab Islamic character of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque (UNESCO referred to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Al-Buraq Wall in their decision, and mentioned their sanctity to the Muslims, ignoring the names “Temple Mount” and “Western Wall,” and the sanctity of these places to the Jews –Ed.). Likewise, the committee called on the international organization to act to end the daily violations of the holy sites, expressed by invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza and attempts to impose the occupation’s falsified reality and falsify the history and culture of Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Palestinian state and its people.”
Op-ed in PA daily denies Jewish history: “I challenge… daily to bring me one Jewish archeological remnant from Jerusalem, or to show us a rock from the alleged Temple”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 26, 2016
Headline: “Those who pass between fleeting words”
Op-ed by Jihad Al-Khazen, originally published in the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper
“The terrorist [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu promises not to give up the Golan. I say to him (through a third party because I cannot speak with him) [parentheses in source] that Tel Aviv is not his. The Golan is part of Syria, and all of Israel is occupied Palestine… What I say is that the occupation of Palestine is an evil thing that will end with the return of the occupiers to the place from where they came. I do not expect that the justice will include putting the members of the Israeli government on trial as the Nazis were put on trial after the fall of the Nazis, but just that they will leave, as Mahmoud Darwish requested when he said to them that they ‘pass between fleeting words’ and that they should take their names and get out from on us. All of their news is a crime or lies. The Jewish holiday of Passover falls on the 22nd of this month, and it marks the anniversary of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. According to information I have received from two university professors, which was verified by my friend, the archeologist Zahi Hawass, this whole story is a biblical myth. I challenge them to bring me one archeological remnant from Egypt or Sinai, as I challenge them daily to bring me one Jewish archeological remnant from Jerusalem, or to show us a rock from the alleged Temple.”

PA bodies protest Israeli Ministry of Tourism maps of Jerusalem that use Jewish names for Jewish religious sites and not the Arabic names
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 6, 2016
Headline: "The presidential committee and the Foreign Ministry condemned the fact that Israel has forged tourist maps"
“The [PA’s] Higher Presidential Committee of Churches’ Affairs in Palestine and the [PA] Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the fact that the Israeli Ministry of Tourism has left important Islamic and Christian sites off the latest version of a guidance pamphlet, which includes a map of Jerusalem and is meant especially for foreign tourists… Likewise, the committee condemned the fact that the names of ancient sites in the Old City [of Jerusalem] have been changed in a way that serves the Israeli historical narrative, such as the use of 'Wailing Wall' instead of the Al-Buraq Wall, and 'Temple Mount' instead of the holy Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary."
Archaeologist on PA TV: Israel is "trying to enlist all the archaeological sites in Jerusalem in support of the alleged Jewish history in Jerusalem"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Apr. 3, 2016
Official PA TV program The Occupied Capital on Israel harming tourism in Jerusalem

Archeologist at the Israeli Arab Al-Aqsa Institute for Islamic Trusts and Heritage Abir Zayyad: "They are trying to enlist all of the archeological sites in Jerusalem in support of the alleged Jewish history in Jerusalem. We have a number of examples of this. The most conspicuous example is the city of Jebus, in the village of Silwan, where Jerusalem developed 10,000 years ago, becoming a real city 4,000 years ago. The occupation is always trying to present it to tourists as a city built by David (i.e., King David), or that David lived in, but David has no connection to the antiquities there, as the antiquities are completely Palestinian Arab."
PA Minister of Religious Affairs: The Al-Aqsa Mosque is in danger from “Israeli plots” to destroy, divide, or replace it with the “alleged Temple”
Source: Amad, independent Palestinian news website, Apr. 1, 2016
Headline: "Ida'is: More than 109 attacks and violations against the holy sites during the months of January and February"
"[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida'is stated… ‘The occupation has turned the occupied city of Jerusalem into a military base through widespread and increased deployment of its forces around the holy sites, in various streets, and around the city, as part of a series of intensified Israeli measures.' Likewise, he said that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is in grave and immediate danger today, which is increasing from day to day, which necessitates the determination of a mechanism of action on the Islamic, Arab, and international level, to deal with the Israeli plots in order to save the [Al-Aqsa] Mosque from destruction, division, and the building of the alleged Temple."

"Division according to areas and times" refers to a proposed law (May 2013) being reviewed in Israeli Parliament that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount. The law seeks to designate separate prayer times and areas of the site for Muslims and Jews. Israeli PM Netanyahu has stated on many occasions that the Israeli government has no intention of ‎changing the status quo on the Temple Mount.

“The CEO of the Islamic Waqf and the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza demanded of Sheikh Azzam Al-Khatib in the name of the Jordanian Waqf, which has authority and sovereignty over the Islamic and Christian holy sites, to cancel the implementation of the decision made by the Israeli government last Sunday [Jan. 31, 2016] to create prayer platforms for the liberal Jews at the expense of waqf land (a waqf is an inalienable religious endowment in Islamic law) and some of the [other] Islamic endowments in the Mughrabi Gate area, next to the western wall of the Al-Aqsa Mosque (i.e., the Western Wall)… The Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories [Al-Khatib] said that the attempts to attack the Al-Buraq plaza and its division into Talmudic (i.e., Jewish) places of prayer for the Jews are nothing other than aggression against the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza and the Islamic endowments. Member of Fatah Central Committee, Abbas Zaki: "Yasser Arafat has been reborn and the crusade continues. The blood, the sweat, and the tears will be a minor matter when the hope for the return and the establishment of a [Palestinian] state with Jerusalem as its capital is realized. When a state is established and we take Jerusalem, the Zionist idea which inspired their hearts will collapse and they will leave, defeated, because they created the myth according to which Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria are The Promised Land, and they are Allah’s chosen people. They will not be Allah’s chosen people, Ursalim (i.e., infrequently used Arabic name for Jerusalem, parallel to Hebrew name) will be nothing but Al-Quds (i.e., more common Arabic name for Jerusalem), Samaria will be nothing but the Mountain of Fire (i.e., nickname for Nablus), and Hebron will be nothing but the capital of rage, until liberation.”

Fatah official: “The current Zionist strategy… is based on the effort to build the alleged Temple in place of the Al-Aqsa Mosque”
Source: Al-Dustour (Jordan), Dec. 16, 2015
"Fatah Central Committee Member Abbas Zaki said that Jordan is considered the present refuge for all oppressed, and emphasized that Jordan's stability is a real strength for Palestine. During the mass rally in the [Jordanian town] Zarka at the compound for professional unions, organized two nights ago [Dec. 14, 2015] by the popular committee for the support of the popular uprising [in Palestine], to mark the anniversary of the Palestinian Stone Intifada (i.e., Palestinian wave of violence and terror against Israel, 1987-1993), he added that the current Jerusalem Intifada is the fruit of the renewed willpower in Palestine, and is an undirected intifada, arising as a result of the inability to coexist with the Zionist occupation… He noted that the Zionist entity carries out organized terror against the Palestinian people, as they are assembling Zionist organizations, like the Zionist Irgun and Haganah (i.e., Jewish defense forces in the pre-state period) gangs, which carry out terror and intimidate. He stated that the right of return of the Palestinian people who was exiled from its land will be guaranteed if Jerusalem is returned, and added that the liberation of Jerusalem can blow up the current Zionist strategy, which is based on the effort to build the alleged Temple in place of the Al-Aqsa Mosque."
Fatah official: Israel “fabricates” archaeological findings in Jerusalem and even “fabricated” the falafel ball
Source: Official PA TV Live, Dec. 16, 2015
?    Official PA TV program The State of Politics, hosting Fatah Central Committee member Dr. Muhammad Shtayyeh, on a single political plan for all the Palestinian forces in regard to the popular resistance and what they call “Israel’s assassination policy.”
Fatah Central Committee member Dr. Muhammad Shtayyeh: “In all of the excavations under the Al-Aqsa Mosque, from 1967 until today - last week they found a seal. [In] all of the excavations from 1967 until today [they] found [only] one seal that belonged to one of the Israelite kings. What are these things? We know that they fabricate the graves. They come at night and open the graves. There is no one inside them. They place chiseled rocks on them, as though they were ancient, and ‘discover’ Jewish graves. Every day [Arab] residents of Jerusalem see these things. A country established on fabrications. They fabricated our history (i.e., claimed it as their own). They want to fabricate our culture (i.e., present it as Israeli/Jewish), and the latest thing that they have fabricated is the falafel ball.”

Note: "One seal that belonged to one of the Israelite kings" is referring to a clay impression of the royal seal of King Hezekiah of Judah (727–698 BCE), that was found in an Israeli archaeological excavation at the foot of the southern wall of the Temple Mount. This seal was the first of its kind to be found in an archaeological excavation and was publicized in the media on Dec. 2, 2015. See here for more information:
