Jerusalem under assault
"Judaization" of Jerusalem
Jerusalem under assault
In 2009 the Palestinian Authority has initiated an unprecedented campaign of historical revision and anti-Israel libels concerning Jerusalem, the focal point being the erasure and denial of 3,000 years of Jewish history in Jerusalem.

In addition, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel is acting both to expel Arabs from Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jerusalem libels are designed to evoke religious hatred by portraying Israel and the Jews as a threat to Arabs and Islam.

This section documents the recent intensification of the Palestinian Authority's campaign of distortion, historical revision and hate incitement surrounding Jerusalem.

This cartoon with the caption "Judaization of Jerusalem" shows, from right to left, a sinister-looking Jew first sharing the chair with an Arab and then shoving him off.
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, official PA daily, Feb 24, 2009]
"Judaization" of Jerusalem
Since Jews are said to have no connection to Jerusalem, nor any right to live in the city, any Israeli action in Jerusalem is defined as "Judaization" and an attempt to erase the city's supposedly authentic Islamic Arab character. The PA has launched an incendiary libel campaign which presents as fact the lie that Israel is acting to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to expel Arabs from the city. The goal of this PA alarmist campaign is to promote fear and hatred of Jews and Israelis.

[It should be noted that the PA allegation that Israel is pursuing a policy of ridding Jerusalem of its Arab inhabitants is blatantly untrue. In fact, according to May 2009 statistics released by the Jerusalem Center for Israel Studies, since Israel’s liberation of all of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War, Jerusalem's Jewish population has increased by 186%, with the Arab population of east Jerusalem growing by 291%, almost twice the growth rate of the Jewish population.]
PA religious council calls on Muslims to ‎‎"use all means available" to protect holy ‎places from "Judaization"‎
Source: Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, Mar. 5, 2015
‎“The [Palestinian] Supreme Fatwa Council ‎warned of the sparking of a religious war in ‎Gaza, which would consume everything in ‎our region and several other regions of the ‎world, as a result of the increase in the rate ‎of attacks and violations [committed] ‎against the Palestinian people and its holy ‎places... The Council called on ‎the Arab and Muslim nations to do their ‎utmost to defend the Palestinian holy ‎places, which are going up in flames of ‎desecration and Judaization; for they have ‎no choice but [to engage in] fervent activity ‎using all means available to them in order ‎to protect the purity of the holy places and ‎prevent the vigorous attempts to desecrate, ‎falsify and Judaize them, before it is too ‎late. ‎This [statement was made] during the 125th ‎session of the Supreme Fatwa Council ‎headed by [PA] Grand Mufti of Jerusalem ‎and the Palestinian Territories, Council ‎Chairman Sheikh Muhammad Hussein.”‎
PA TV: Israeli building near Tel Aviv is ‎a “continuation of its Judaization ‎policy”‎

Official PA TV host: “The Israeli authorities ‎have approved a Judaization project to ‎build 60,000 housing units in the Tel Aviv ‎area. Israeli military camps will be ‎transferred to the Negev and will be ‎replaced with housing units.”‎
Official PA TV reporter: “In continuation of ‎its Judaization policy, the aim of which is ‎to establish demographic and legal facts ‎on the ground, the so-called Israel Land ‎Administration has recently approved an ‎agreement to build 60,000 Judaization ‎‎[housing] units around Tel Aviv. This ‎Judaization project is the product of a ‎previous agreement between the ‎occupation’s Defense Ministry and the so-‎called Israel Land Administration… There ‎is no doubt that a plan of this kind comes ‎as part of the activity to Judaize the ‎Negev, which includes dozens of Arab ‎villages that are not recognized by the Tel ‎Aviv government.”‎
PA Mufti warns of "Israeli plan to Judaize Jerusalem" and "steal" its "Islamic character" via "falsification of facts"
Source: Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, Feb. 12, 2015
Headline: "Grand Mufti warns of the naming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque 'Temple Mount'"
"[PA] Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories and Preacher at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque Sheikh Muhammad Hussein warned about the placement of a sign by the occupation [Jerusalem] municipality near the Council Gate ( i.e., entrance to the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount), with the inscription, 'Temple Mount.' The Mufti said this step came as part of the attempts to divide the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews, extend their influence over it and establish facts on the ground inside it, like what happened at the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron, in order to realize their aspirations to build the alleged Temple on the ruins of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Mufti explained that with the elections of the occupation authorities approaching, all the parties are trying to draw the votes of the extreme right by increasing the attack on the Palestinian people and its holy places. He emphasized that the Israeli plan to Judaize Jerusalem and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and to lay hands on them, is an illusion, because the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque with its courtyards, porticoes and all [other] parts, both those above ground and those below - is the exclusive right of Muslims. He also noted that Jerusalem would retain its Islamic character and Arab identity, and that the occupation would not steal its character and identity, no matter how long it continues its crimes and its falsification of facts."

Abbas' Advisor: Israel denies Jerusalem's "Arab and Islamic character" and attempts "to force... the Jewish character" on it
Source: WAFA news agency, Feb. 11, 2015
Headline: "Al-Habbash demands that UNESCO intervene to prevent the falsification of the facts and history in Jerusalem"
"Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari'ah Judge and the President's [Mahmoud Abbas'] Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, demanded today [Feb. 11, 2015], that UNESCO urgently and immediately intervene to prevent the Israeli occupation from falsifying the facts and destroying the human heritage in Jerusalem. In a press release, Al-Habbash warned of the severity of the escalatory measure implemented by the Israeli occupation municipality crews, in placing a sign in Arabic, Hebrew and English calling the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque 'the Temple of Solomon' near the Inspector's Gate (Council Gate) [parenthesis in source], one of the gates of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Habbash said that Israel's changing of names in the Holy City is a kind of intentional falsification of history and heritage, and a desperate attempt to deny the [city's] Arab and Islamic character and force a new, invented character - the Jewish character. He noted that this was a most dangerous step, heralding grave consequences. Al-Habbash explained that, despite the Judaization actions carried out by the Israeli occupation government and its various branches against Jerusalem, and despite the attempts to eradicate its Arab and Islamic characteristics and the continuing land expropriation and construction of settlements on its land, this will not change the fact that it [Jerusalem] is the religious, political and spiritual capital of Palestine, to which the Jews have no right."

Israel “allocated 17 billion dollars for the Judaization of the Holy City”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 27, 2015
“Secretary-General of the Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places Hanna Issa said that Israel had allocated 17 billion dollars for the Judaization of the Holy City [Jerusalem], and noted that the occupation had succeeded in building an entire city beneath the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which includes seven tunnels and halls that can hold 5,000 people. In addition, he stressed that the occupation does as it pleases in the Holy City, without any consideration for the Arab and Islamic world. Issa spoke during a political conference organized by the [PA] Ministry of Information under the title, ‘Jerusalem and the Judaization Policy,’ held in the presence of and with the patronage of Tulkarem District Governor Issam Abu Bakr, Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida'is, Secretary-General of the Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places Dr. Hanna Issa and Deputy Minister of Communications Mahmoud Khalifa… [Minister] Ida'is addressed the suffering of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the attempts to eradicate their Arab and Islamic identity and the Judaization policy that began in 1967 with the aim of rebuilding the so-called ‘alleged Temple.’”

“Headline: PA Mufti and Qurei warned of attempts to infringe on the ownership of the Al-Aqsa Mosque”
“PA Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories and Preacher at the Al-Aqsa Mosque Sheikh Muhammad Hussein warned of the attempts to infringe on the ownership of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which belongs to Muslims alone and no one else. These statements were made after an extremist occupation organization declared its plans to officially register the Al-Aqsa Mosque as the property of the Israeli government in order to build Jewish synagogues on parts of it, ahead of the construction of the alleged Temple… PLO Executive Committee Member and Head of the Department for Jerusalem Affairs Ahmed Qurei ‘Abu Alaa’… said that these Jewish organizations, which are actively engaged in the field of settlement and [in sounding] the call to Judaize the Holy City, reflect the Israeli occupation government’s course of action, which aims to take control of the Holy City and harm the Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular, since the goal behind this plan is to Judaize the Al-Aqsa Mosque, give it a Jewish character and build the alleged Temple over it…"

Al-Aqsa Mosque preacher: Israel is carrying out “Judaization of the holy places in Jerusalem”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 5, 2015
“The education administration in the Bethlehem district, together with the Al-Dawha municipality, organized a conference with the title, ‘The Future of the Islamic and Christian Holy Places in Jerusalem’ in the city of Al-Dawha, with the participation of [Head of the Palestinian Organization of Clerics and Disseminators of Islam and former Mufti of Jerusalem] Sheikh Dr. Ikrima Sabri, Archbishop Atallah Hanna and [advisor to Mahmoud Abbas on Jerusalem Affairs] attorney Ahmed Al-Ruweidi …
In his speech, Sabri, the imam and preacher of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the head of the Supreme Muslim Council, addressed the fact that the multiplying dangers are occurring parallel to the Judaization of the holy places in Jerusalem, as the Arab countries are busy with their internal conflicts. He noted that the occupation has targeted these holy places because they link the world’s Muslims and Christians to the land of Palestine. In addition, he emphasized that history bears witness to the fact that there are no historic Jewish landmarks [in Palestine], and that they [Israel] invent and falsify history through the construction of synagogues.”
Abbas advisor warns of the “Zionist Judaization project against Islamic and Christian holy places”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Dec. 11, 2014
“[PA Chairman Abbas’ advisor on NGOs and] Fatah Central Committee member Sultan Abu Al-Einein said that Fatah would not stand idly by while its members are harmed, especially in the city of occupied Jerusalem, the latest [such event] being the arrest of [Fatah Jerusalem] branch member Abir Ziad… Abu Al-Einein called Fatah’s leaders and members the vanguard in the confrontation with the Zionist Judaization project against the Islamic and Christian holy places and the Arab Palestinian presence in Jerusalem. Abu Al-Einein warned of the results of the increasing Israeli escalation in Jerusalem, which is taking place parallel to the elections in which the Israeli parties are immersed, and accused the Israeli parties of using violence against our people in their election campaign. In addition, Abu Al-Einein warned of the policy of the depopulation of the Holy City and of the ethnic cleansing being carried out by the ultra-extremists in the city though the expulsion policy recently adopted by Israel, and the placing of obstacles in the way of the Murabitin (those who carry out Ribat, religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) at the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
Fatah's Jerusalem branch warns of Israeli plans to "Judaize Jerusalem and its holy symbols"
Source: The Capital City, bi-weekly paper distributed with the official PA daily, Dec. 2, 2014
“The Israeli Magistrate Court has published its decision to impose administrative detention on Adnan Ghaith, director of Fatah’s Jerusalem branch… Ghaith assumed his position at a time when Jerusalem was witnessing recurring closings of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, an increase in the occupation’s arrogance and savagery toward the city’s residents, expressed through the murder of Jerusalem residents on the one hand, and through recurring attacks against the residents of Jerusalem by the settler herds on the other. Things got to the point that [Fatah’s Jerusalem] branch published an announcement calling for a general recruitment of the Palestinian masses and of Jerusalem residents. The announcement read: ‘The fact that the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been abandoned and its sanctity defiled amounts to a declaration of religious war against the Palestinian people, the Arab nation and the Muslim nation. Therefore, we are calling on all citizens to carry out Ribat (religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, in order to defend it, whatever the sacrifice, and in order to prevent the occupation authorities from carrying out their plans to Judaize Jerusalem and its holy symbols…’"

PA Jerusalem Council rejects the "Judaizing names" at Al-Aqsa Mosque "that distort the eternal truth"
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, Nov. 26, 2014
“The Supreme Muslim Council and the [PA’s] Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places stressed their firm opposition to the occupation’s proposed law, which prohibits Ribat (religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) at the Al-Aqsa Mosque... In addition, the statement noted that ‘the occupation has placed signs on the outer gates of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, bearing foreign Hebrew names and terms, which have nothing to do with the Al-Aqsa Mosque.’ The statement emphasized the ‘rejection of the Hebrew names and terms that are foreign to the gates of the Al-Aqsa Mosque – foreign Judaizing names that distort the eternal truth, according to which this place is sacred to Muslims alone, and we will not accept or recognize them!’ The statement called for the removal of the signs the occupation placed on the outer gates. The statement clarified that ‘It is forbidden for any authority or individual to intervene in our Islamic religious affairs.’ In addition, [the Councils] emphasized that ‘the Jews have no right to even a single grain of earth at the Al-Aqsa Mosque,’ and that ‘the occupation authorities are attempting to falsify and distort the facts regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque.’"

Note: “
Murabitin” law – In November 2014, Israel’s Public Security Ministry and defense establishment promoted a bill to declare illegal the organization of Palestinian guards stationed on the Temple Mount to prevent Jews from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. These guards, known in Arabic as Murabitin (those carrying out Ribat, religious conflict/war to protect land claimed to be Islamic), have repeatedly clashed with Israeli police and Jewish worshippers in recent years.

PLO official warns of Israel’s plans “to Judaize the holy city"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 19, 2014
This article was published during a period of high tension in Jerusalem. On Oct. 22 and Nov. 5, 2014, two separate terror attacks took place in which ‎Palestinians ‎drove their cars into pedestrians in Jerusalem, killing 4 and injuring dozens. On Oct. 29, 2014, Islamic Jihad member Mutaz Hijazi attempted to assassinate Rabbi Yehuda Glick, a prominent activist working to assure rights for Jews to visit and pray on the Temple Mount. On Nov. 18, 2014, two Palestinians entered a synagogue in Jerusalem and attacked worshippers with guns, knives and axes, killing 4 worshippers and a police officer.
“PLO Executive Committee Member and Head of the Department for Jerusalem Affairs Ahmed Qurei ‘Abu Alaa’ met with Egyptian consul Hammam Abu Zaid yesterday [Nov. 18, 2014]. During the meeting, Qurei summarized the Israeli violations and attacks in Jerusalem, especially the events at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Invasions and systematic daily violations by settlers and extremist Jews are increasing [in frequency] – an issue which requires an international defense of Jerusalem, its residents, and its holy places from the Israeli aggression and [Israel’s] plans to Judaize the Holy City. Qurei emphasized the importance of coming out against the ceaseless Israeli aggression against Jerusalem and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque. He called on the Arab and Islamic nation to stop the serious dangers threatening Jerusalem and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
PA daily op-ed: Jerusalem “is undergoing a process of systematic and uninhibited Judaization”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 19, 2014
Op-ed by Osama Al-Fara, regular columnist for Al-Hayat Al-Jadida:
“Whoever thinks the current events in occupied Jerusalem lack the characteristics of a full Intifada is wrong. So is anyone who thinks that the snowball that began rolling with the abominable crime the settlers perpetrated against Muhammad Abu Khdeir can be stopped without stopping its true causes. Likewise, whoever thinks the Intifada will be geographically confined to Jerusalem is also wrong, and whoever thinks it is the result of a decision, and that it can be contained with another decision, has not read the history [books] well. The events that have occurred in Jerusalem and its environs in the past few weeks, characterized by run-over [incidents] and stabbings, indicate that the Palestinian citizen can no longer tolerate the settlers’ riots and that the occupation government’s scheme to divide Al-Aqsa according to time and place has crossed all red lines, meaning that Palestinian action is inevitable..."

“Fatah spokesman Ahmad Assaf said that [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas had been leading a fierce battle to defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the [Israeli] attempts to Judaize and take control of it, and to realize [Palestinian] freedom and independence and obtain a decision on setting a timetable for ending the occupation… Assaf added that the occupation government has lost its senses and is trying to change the existing situation at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In addition, he warned of its actions aimed at dividing the Al-Aqsa Mosque according to place and time, and of its old claims that the Al-Aqsa Mosque was built over the ruins of the ‘Temple Mount’ – a claim they have not succeeded in proving over all these years.”

Israel continues its attempt to “take control of Al-Aqsa Mosque” and its “Judaization” of Jerusalem
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 5, 2014
“At its weekly meeting in Ramallah yesterday, Tuesday [Nov. 5, 2014], presided over by Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, the [PA] government stressed that the occupation government is seeking to escalate the situation in the region in order to realize its aggressive settlement plans against the Palestinian people, its land and holy places…

The government stressed that our people’s heroic resolve and strong willpower in the Holy City, the firm position of its leadership and the steadfast Jordanian position would thwart these plans.
It warned that the Israeli government would continue its attempt to take control of Al-Aqsa and to Judaize Jerusalem, and that the Arab and Islamic nation, the Arab League, the Islamic Congress and the Jerusalem Congress must therefore do their duty to defend the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, strengthen the resolve of the residents of Jerusalem, and aid the Palestinian people in the battle in defense of Al-Aqsa and the holy places…"

Qalqilya governor warns of “official Israeli attacks” against Al-Aqsa Mosque “aimed at completing the Judaization of Jerusalem”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 4, 2014
In a speech on Oct. 17, 2014, Mahmoud Abbas called on all Palestinians to "carry out Ribat (religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) to protect Al-Aqsa Mosque from being "defiled" by Israel. PA TV broadcast that specific part of Abbas' speech 19 times in 3 days . In the same vein, the governor of Qalqilya states that Palestinians are carrying out Ribat to protect Al-Aqsa Mosque under the orders of Abbas:
“During a popular and official meeting, Qalqilya District Governor Rafe' Rawajbeh inaugurated the campaign of Ribat (religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) for Jerusalem and for the Murabitin (those who carry out Ribat) at the Al-Aqsa Mosque… Rawajbeh summarized the systematic schemes, official Israeli attacks and the attacks of the settlers on Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa, which are aimed at completing the Judaization of Jerusalem and the division of Al-Aqsa according to time and space.
He said: ‘Our campaign today is [being carried out] at the command and under the guidance of the President [Mahmoud Abbas], in order to defend Al-Aqsa and because of the Israeli attacks and schemes to divide it according to space and time. In addition, it comes in view of the fact that some of our brothers are continuing to carry out Ribat inside Al-Aqsa in order to defend its history and the rights of the Muslims.’

The cartoon shows an hourglass in which the Dome of the Rock is “running out” and turning into “Solomon’s alleged Temple” at the bottom of the hourglass.

Note: This cartoon was published a few days after Mutaz Hijazi, an Islamic Jihad member and released prisoner, attempted to murder Rabbi Yehuda Glick. Rabbi Glick is the Chairman of the Temple Mount Heritage Foundation that works to increase awareness of the central place the Temple Mount and the Temple hold in Jewish heritage through educational activities and by encouraging people to visit the Temple Mount. Abbas advisor: Israel plans to Judaize Al-Aqsa Mosque and build “alleged Temple over the ruins”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 31, 2014
“Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, said that the complete closing of the Al-Aqsa Mosque for the first time [since 1967] was planned by the official establishment of the occupation state. In addition, he said that ‘the claim of the attempted murder of the extremist Yehuda Glick, who engineered the daily invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque’s plazas and calls for the construction of the alleged Temple over the ruins of the Mosque, was the excuse needed to carry out this premeditated plan to divide Al-Aqsa and permit the Jews to pray in it just like the Muslims. This constitutes the first step toward the complete Judaization [of the Mosque] and toward the banning of Muslims from going to it.’”

PLO Executive: Israel is spreading “destruction and Judaization” at Al-Aqsa Mosque
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 27, 2014
“PLO Executive Committee Member and Head of the Department for Jerusalem Affairs Ahmed Qurei ‘Abu Alaa’ said that the settler herds’ invasion of Al-Aqsa (i.e., the Temple Mount) through the Mughrabi Gate, their attack on the Murabitat (women who carry out Ribat, religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) and the arrest of the citizen and Old City resident Samiha Joudeh as she was entering the Mosque, amount to war crimes, perpetrated by the Israeli occupation government as part of its infringement of the [Muslim’s] freedom of worship. Qurei reiterated his firm opposition to all violations and to the offensive of daily invasions Israel is carrying out against Al-Aqsa. Abu Alaa addressed the gravity of the situation in Jerusalem, particularly in the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, as a result of the destruction and Judaization the settlers are spreading in the Mosque’s plazas.
Qurei called for increased presence and Ribat in Al-Aqsa and its environs. He welcomed the efforts of the residents of Jerusalem to block the attacks and invasions of the settlers and extremist Jews, and the fact that they were preventing them, with chests bared, from entering the Mosque and touring its plazas.”
PA TV libel: Israel “implant[s] fake Jewish graves” in Jerusalem “to support… [their] fake Judaization stories”
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Oct. 27, 2014
Official PA TV report alleging that Israel has been placing fake graves in the Silwan neighborhood of East Jerusalem (near the site of the ancient Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives):
Official PA TV reporter: “The list of the means the occupation [uses] to Judaize the Holy City is long. It includes implanting fake Jewish graves in the land of the [Arab] residents of Jerusalem, in an attempt to create props and décor to support [their] false claims and fake Judaization stories about this land. Here, in the Wadi Al-Rababa neighborhood of Silwan, north of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the occupation began implanting, three years ago, dozens of fake graves in an area of over 60 dunams – just as it had done in other neighborhoods, where it implanted thousands of fake graves.
Mustafa Abu Zahra, head of the Committee for the Maintenance of Muslim Cemeteries in Jerusalem: “Israel is still falsifying its history and the facts, and places fake graves on the ground. It digs ditches, pours concrete over them, then lays a stone on top and covers it with dirt to make it look hundreds or thousands of years old.”
Official PA TV reporter: “The occupation brought new stones and inscribed Hebrew names on them. It claims these graves are thousands of years old, even though the reinforced concrete is new and the residents of this area have witnessed this crime of forgery… The occupation is Judaizing Jerusalem like an octopus. Here it implants graves, there settlement nests – in an attempt to prove its [longtime] presence on this land. Being a forgery, it is bound to fail.”
