Jerusalem under assault
"Judaization" of Jerusalem
Jerusalem under assault
In 2009 the Palestinian Authority has initiated an unprecedented campaign of historical revision and anti-Israel libels concerning Jerusalem, the focal point being the erasure and denial of 3,000 years of Jewish history in Jerusalem.

In addition, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel is acting both to expel Arabs from Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jerusalem libels are designed to evoke religious hatred by portraying Israel and the Jews as a threat to Arabs and Islam.

This section documents the recent intensification of the Palestinian Authority's campaign of distortion, historical revision and hate incitement surrounding Jerusalem.

This cartoon with the caption "Judaization of Jerusalem" shows, from right to left, a sinister-looking Jew first sharing the chair with an Arab and then shoving him off.
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, official PA daily, Feb 24, 2009]
"Judaization" of Jerusalem
Since Jews are said to have no connection to Jerusalem, nor any right to live in the city, any Israeli action in Jerusalem is defined as "Judaization" and an attempt to erase the city's supposedly authentic Islamic Arab character. The PA has launched an incendiary libel campaign which presents as fact the lie that Israel is acting to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to expel Arabs from the city. The goal of this PA alarmist campaign is to promote fear and hatred of Jews and Israelis.

[It should be noted that the PA allegation that Israel is pursuing a policy of ridding Jerusalem of its Arab inhabitants is blatantly untrue. In fact, according to May 2009 statistics released by the Jerusalem Center for Israel Studies, since Israel’s liberation of all of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War, Jerusalem's Jewish population has increased by 186%, with the Arab population of east Jerusalem growing by 291%, almost twice the growth rate of the Jewish population.]
Fatah official: Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque are "facing a threat of Judaization on an ‎unprecedented scale"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, June 14, 2014
Official PA TV News interviewed Fatah ‎Revolutionary Council Secretary-General ‎Amin Maqbul ‎
Fatah Revolutionary Council Secretary-‎General Amin Maqbul: “Jerusalem is ‎currently facing a threat of Judaization on ‎an unprecedented scale. The Al-Aqsa ‎Mosque is being subjected to division ‎according to times and places [for Jews’ ‎and Muslims’ visits to the Temple Mount]. ‎Jerusalem is in real danger; these are not ‎‎[empty] cries [for help] emerging from ‎Jerusalem, for there is real danger there, ‎everywhere in Jerusalem – at [the] Al-‎Aqsa [Mosque] and all the places in ‎Jerusalem that are undergoing ‎Judaization on an unprecedented scale. ‎This escalates [the situation] at a crazy ‎‎[rate], because of the occupation.”‎
This is clear, as we see desecrations of ‎the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound every day ‎‎– the last of which was the female dancer ‎who danced in the Al-Aqsa plaza – by the ‎Zionists, who are working to Judaize ‎Jerusalem.‎
Indeed, the next battle is the Jerusalem ‎battle – a battle which has actually been ‎‎[going on] all this time, and for which ‎Yasser Arafat died as a Martyr (Shahid) as ‎a result of his adherence to Jerusalem ‎and his refusal to give up a single piece or ‎grain of earth from the holy city of ‎Jerusalem. That was in accordance with ‎what happened and what was achieved at ‎the second Camp David [Summit].”‎
PLO official: Jerusalem lights festival "incite[s] to the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque"
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, June 13, 2014
“PLO Executive Committee Member and Head of the Department for Jerusalem Affairs Ahmed Qurei ‘Abu Alaa‘… condemned the opening, for the sixth consecutive year, of the Jewish Festival of Lights in Jerusalem, organized by the Israeli occupation municipality, the Israeli Ministry of Tourism and the so-called Jerusalem Development Authority. In addition, he warned of the dangers and implications of the projects, events and light shows included in this Judaization festival, which present Talmudic stories aimed at concealing the Arab and Islamic culture and the cultural identity of the Holy City. In addition, [he said that] these events incite to the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the construction of the alleged Temple on its ruins.”
Abbas: Israel "would have destroyed the Al-Aqsa [Mosque]" if it could
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, June 8, 2014
Egyptian TV host: From Bethlehem to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Mr. President, we see a continuous Judaization and desecration of the holy places. What are the practical measures against this [Israeli] plan?
PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas: We cannot take any practical measures other than protests, demonstrations and peaceful popular resistance... If the Israelis were allowed to go further, they would have gone further and destroyed the Al-Aqsa [Mosque]. They would have destroyed the Al-Aqsa [Mosque], but I I don’t think they will do it... The Israelis are now far more careful in all their steps, because we can hurt them legally and diplomatically - it isn't "diplomatic terrorism." We can hurt them legally and diplomatically in the whole world if they continue to behave like that.

Sheikh: "The stones of Jerusalem say to it [Israel], 'You are a foreigner'"
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, June 7, 2014
‎“The Supreme Muslim Council organized ‎a [protest] vigil and sit-down strike on the ‎‎47th anniversary of the Naksa (i.e., ‘the ‎setback,’ Palestinian term for Israel's ‎victory in the Six Day War) and in support ‎of the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the steps of the ‎Damascus Gate, one of the most famous ‎gates of the Old City…‎
The Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine, ‎Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, warned of ‎the occupation’s intensifying Judaization ‎projects in Jerusalem. He continued: ‘The ‎oppressive occupation is trying to Judaize ‎the people and the stones, and to ‎obliterate the city’s Islamic and Arab ‎landmarks. But Jerusalem will remain the ‎heart and eternal capital of Palestine.’ ‎
Fatah Revolutionary Council member ‎Hatem Abd Al-Qader said: ‘On this ‎anniversary and this [protest] vigil, we ‎recite the Al-Fatiha Sura (opening Sura of ‎the Quran) over the souls of the Martyrs ‎‎(Shahids), salute the prisoners, and ‎emphasize that the occupation does not ‎scare us and will not alter our will despite ‎all its actions.’ He continued: ‘Jerusalem ‎will remain Islamic, Arab, Palestinian, and ‎the occupation is ephemeral, as were all ‎those who were foreign to it [Jerusalem]...’ ‎
Deputy Head of the Islamic Movement in ‎the 1948 territories (i.e., Israel) Sheikh ‎Kamal Khatib: ‘… 47 years have passed ‎since the occupation of Jerusalem; ‎despite this, the people of Jerusalem say ‎to the occupation: “You are a foreigner;” ‎the stones of Jerusalem say to it: “You are ‎a foreigner;" and the land and skies of ‎Jerusalem say: “The occupation is foreign, ‎and it will leave, just as all the previous ‎occupations left.”’”‎
Abbas to Pope: "Israel is taking systematic action aimed at changing [Jerusalem's] identity and character and at harassing its Palestinian Christian and Muslim residents"
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 26, 2014
Excerpt from [PA] Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' speech at the press conference with Pope Francis
“We informed His Holiness of the results of the negotiations and the obstacles that lie in their path, foremost among which are the [Israeli] settlements, the daily attacks on the houses of worship – churches and mosques – and the confinement of thousands of Palestinian prisoners who are longing for freedom in the Israeli prisons. For over 30 days now, many of them have been on a hunger strike because of the bad treatment [they receive] and the fact that they are being detained without sentences, [in] what is known as administrative detention. We also informed His Holiness of the tragic situation in East Jerusalem, the capital of our state that has been occupied since 1967, where Israel is taking systematic action aimed at changing its [Jerusalem’s] identity and character and at harassing its Palestinian Christian and Muslim residents, in order to induce them to emigrate and to prevent believers outside it from praying at its houses of worship…
These Israeli actions have led to the emigration of many of our Christian and Muslim brethren; we are seeing to it that they remain rooted in their land, the fatherland.”
Abbas’ advisor: Israel creates “artificial Jewish heritage” in Jerusalem
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 8, 2014
“The advisor on Jerusalem Affairs to the [Palestinian] President's [Abbas’] Office, attorney Ahmed Al-Ruweidi, emphasized that Jerusalem is in need of an emergency rescue plan to enable its people and institutions to stand firm, to protect the Palestinian sector’s development and demographic growth, which Israel has been trying to reduce by restricting Arab and Palestinian existence in the city, strengthening the Jewish presence… and by attempting to create an artificial Jewish heritage at the expense of the city’s [original] identity. Al-Ruweidi made this statement yesterday [May 7, 2014] during his meeting with several [representatives of] international institutions active in the Holy City.”
PA official accuses Israel of "Judaization" through "settlement," "expulsion of Palestinians" and "falsification of archeological finds"
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 16, 2014
“Palestine Polytechnic University in Hebron, in cooperation with the [PA’s] Islamic-Christian Council for Support of Jerusalem and the Holy Sites, held a conference yesterday [April 15, 2014] under the heading ‘The Current Situation of Jerusalem’…
The Secretary-General of the PA’s Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places Hanna Issa said Jerusalem is an essential and central issue that is being subjected to the most severe forms of Judaization, expulsion, falsification and theft of history. He noted the means of Judaization being used by the occupation: settlement, land takeover, the expulsion of Palestinians and the annulment of their ID cards, the falsification of archeological finds, and additional methods.”

PA minister: Israel attempts to "Judaize" Jerusalem, plans to build the "alleged Third Temple" in place of Al-Aqsa
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 15, 2014
“[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that since Israel occupied Jerusalem, it has been working to extend control over it and alter its landmarks, in order to Judaize it and put an end to the Arab presence in it…
In a statement to the press yesterday [April 14, 2014], Al-Habbash said… that the Israeli establishment is seeking to fulfill its dream, with the aim of building what it refers to as the alleged Third Temple in place of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and of completely altering the heritage and culture of the city and its Islamic light . This has become evident in the wake of the series of steps [it has taken] to Judaize [the city], the increase in the number of daily, official invasions [of the Al-Aqsa Mosque], and the intensification and expansion of their media campaign regarding the need to build the alleged Temple.”

The PA considers any presence of Jews on the Temple Mount an "invasion." However, all visitors are subject to rigorous checks by Israeli security personnel before being granted access to the Temple Mount.
PA Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Israel carries out "Judaization plan" at Al-Aqsa, plans to destroy Mosque and build Temple
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 14, 2014
"The PA Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned Israel's escalation against civilians, their property and holy sites... The Ministry disclosed that for more than two years it informed all Muslims and Arabs, at an official and public level about the nature of the Judaization plan at the Al-Aqsa Mosque (i.e., the Temple Mount Plaza)... The Israeli government has been carrying out this plan on a daily basis, and the rate of escalation and repression against Al-Aqsa is increasing... towards dividing it (the Temple Mount) geographically and according to time (allocating times and spaces for different religions), destroying it and building what is referred to as 'the Temple' in its place."

He described this criminal act as ‎a preparation for turning the Al-Aqsa ‎Mosque into a synagogue and for the ‎laying of the cornerstone of the alleged ‎Temple…‎
He called on our people, wherever they ‎may be, to take the initiative to protect the ‎just Palestinian cause and the existence ‎of the Palestinian people in its country ‎and homeland, and to go to the Al-Aqsa ‎Mosque, maintain continuous presence ‎there and act against the danger of its ‎Judaization and destruction.”‎
Israel has launched "the greatest occupation scheme in the Al-Aqsa Mosque – the building of the alleged Temple and the complete Judaizing of occupied Jerusalem"
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 4, 2014
“The [PA’s] Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places said yesterday [April 3, 2014] that the fact that the Israeli occupation authorities have opened [for visitors] a section of the deep Silwan tunnel, the Spring Citadel, in the proximity of Al -Ayn Al-Fawqa (i.e., the upper spring), south of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, constitutes the launch of the greatest occupation scheme in the Al-Aqsa Mosque – the building of the alleged Temple and the complete Judaizing of occupied Jerusalem.”
Israeli Arab MP: Israel carries out a "Judaization frenzy" in the Negev, Galilee, and other areas
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Mar. 31, 2014
“In Nazareth, [Israeli Arab] MP Masud Ganaim of the United Arab List, called to turn Land Day into a day of struggle and unity for all groups of our Arab-Palestinian nation within the 1948 territories (i.e., Israel).
In a statement, Ganaim said: ‘The 38th anniversary of Land Day reaches us while the Judaization frenzy continues to intensify and while our people continue to suffer from the expropriation and Judaization policy that has become clear and evident in the Negev, the Galilee, the Triangle (Israeli region bordering the West Bank with a large Arab population) and in the mixed cities. Considering this reality, we need this flame and this spark, which were lit on March 30, 1976, and kindled a path of struggle based on collective action.”

Land Day – an annual commemoration of the general strike and demonstrations organized by Israeli Arab residents of the Galilee on March 30, 1976 to protest the Israeli government's decision to expropriate land in the Galilee for security and settlement purposes, which it later implemented. During the protests, demonstrators burnt tires, blocked roads, and threw rocks and firebombs. Six demonstrators were shot and killed by the Israeli army and police. Israeli Arabs and Palestinians consider Land Day a national day.
PA minister accuses Israel of implementing "Judaization projects"
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Mar. 30, 2014
“The [Popular] Front for the Liberation of Palestine called Land Day a symbol of the spirit of struggle and self-sacrifice demonstrated by our people and the Martyrs (Shahids) of Palestine through their devotion to the option of resistance to a cruel occupation that was planted in our land by force of arms…
[PA] Minister of Agriculture Walid Assaf called for the broadest possible popular participation in the 38th Land Day events. He said that this day represented a milestone in the Palestinian struggle against the occupation’s Judaization projects, which aim to steal additional tracts of Palestinian land for purposes of settlement expansion and [the construction of] the racist separation fence. The Popular Front expressed… its strong opposition to the land swap agreement achieved by the negotiations, because it contains ‘a recognition and admission of Israel’s right to the larger part of the land of Palestine. The entire land is Palestinian land, and the agreement to swap part of it with another part that has [remained] stolen [land] since 1948 amounts to the support and legitimization of a future Israeli policy, whose aim will be to expel our people from the 1948 territories (i.e., Israel).’”

Note: Land Day – an annual commemoration of the general strike and demonstrations organized by Israeli Arab residents of the Galilee on March 30, 1976 to protest the Israeli government's decision to expropriate land in the Galilee for security and settlement purposes, which it later implemented. Israeli Arabs and Palestinians consider it a national day.
Grand Mufti of Jerusalem: Israel Judaizes Jerusalem and plans to destroy Al-Aqsa Mosque
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Mar. 26, 2014
“The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein… said: ‘Considering the escalation of the occupation’s attack on Jerusalem in an attempt to completely Judaize it, obscure its Islamic characteristics, [and] lay hands on the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque… in addition to the threat of destroying the Al-Aqsa Mosque to establish the alleged Temple on its ruins – Heaven forbid – we wish to emphasize our previous religious rulings on the matter [of visits to the mosque by non-Palestinian Muslims, which read] as follows:
a. The plazas, walls, buildings, courtyards, domes, colonnades and stone benches of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, everything underneath the Al-Aqsa Mosque and everything above it, are Waqf (an inalienable religious endowment in Islamic law) until Judgment Day, and the Muslims have an exclusive right to them, which they share with no one."

Official PA daily: "Judaization" of Jerusalem based on "myths and fables" continues
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Mar. 24, 2014
Op-ed by Baha Rahal
“The series of Judaization actions in Jerusalem has been going on since the beginning of the occupation of the city and since the Arab armies were defeated and fled the battlefield in June 1967, abandoning the land of the Mi'raj (Muhammad’s Ascent to Heaven) and the Resurrection of the Dead to the occupation, which has tightened its grip on the city and begun to put forth mendacious and absurd claims and to invent [things] based on myths and fables…
Alone, Jerusalem counts the time [remaining]; alone, it stands in confronting a merciless enemy, who doesn’t hesitate to implement its plans and policy against the Holy City. This policy is not confined to isolating the city with the racist wall or driving out the residents of Jerusalem, and does not stop with the demolishing of homes, but aims for the destruction of the Islamic and Christian holy places in order to construct their alleged Temple on the ruins of the houses of Allah and the places of worship. This is the real challenge undermining the stability of Jerusalem these days – at a time when we are hearing a few hesitant voices that condemn or denounce. We do not hear the voice of the majority in the Arab and Islamic world, or the world at large – a fact which the occupation state sees as a golden opportunity, especially in the wake of the so-called ‘Arab Spring,’ the fighting going on in several countries, the explosions and violence in Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen and other places. These days, the Arabs are split and divided… O brothers, o friends: There is no time to wait when [one is confronted] with an enemy racing against time. The time has come for you to desist from your old habit of condemning the occupation, which understands only the language of power.”

PA TV: Israel spreads drugs in an effort to "Judaize" Jerusalem
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Mar. 8, 2014
Official PA TV program Special Missions about drugs in Jerusalem.
The program hosted Dr. Husni Awad, a psychology lecturer at Al-Quds Open University.
Dr. Husni Awad: “Since occupying Jerusalem in 1967, Israel has made an effort to distribute drugs and to facilitate their distribution, especially in Jerusalem, and this is a link in a chain [of efforts] to Judaize Jerusalem – in other words, [to gain] control of it.”
PA TV host: “The occupation is the main factor behind the spread of the phenomenon [of drug use] in Jerusalem and its environs, and its purpose is to ruin the [young] generation and distract it from the causes it faces, first of all the resistance.”
PA minister denies Jewish history and complains of “Judaization” of Jerusalem
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Mar. 7, 2014
“[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash emphasized that the continuing settlement and Judaization of the holy city [Jerusalem], the attacks on its holy sites, the escalating Israeli aggression against Jerusalem, the falsifying of its history with the aim of erasing its cultural, human and historical heritage, and the demographic and geographic changes in the city are all moves that are null and void according to international law, the decisions of the international institutions, and the Geneva and Hague Conventions for the Protection of Cultural Property.
In addition, he warned again of the danger of the racist Israeli violations being planned against [the] Al-Aqsa [Mosque], the Ibrahimi Mosque (Cave of the Patriarchs), and the rest of our people’s holy sites, all of which confirm that Israel’s aim is to tighten its control over [the] Al-Aqsa [Mosque], in preparation for destroying it and building their alleged Temple.”

Israel's goal is Judaization of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem in preparation for building third Temple
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Mar. 1, 2014
Op-ed by Omar Hilmi Al-Ghoul, regular columnist for Al-Hayat Al-Jadida:
“The Israeli attack on [the] Al-Aqsa [Mosque] has crossed all political lines and is adding fuel to the flames of Palestinian public wrath, in order to ignite political fires and clothe them in religious garb. In addition, it complements and is consistent with the parallel, worrisome trend, that is meant to achieve several objectives, among them: … the exploitation of the Arabs’ present state of weakness in order to advance the process of the Judaization of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular and of Jerusalem as a whole, in preparation for the construction of the third Temple on its ruins.”
PA minister accuses Israel of goal to rule over Al-Aqsa; refuses to recognize Israel's "existence in Jerusalem"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Feb. 28, 2014
Official PA TV broadcast the Friday sermon from the Al-Tashrifat Mosque in the presidential compound. The sermon was delivered by PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash.
PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “In the occupation state (i.e., Israel), they are talking about a tale, about a lie and [the] insane [idea] of extending Israeli sovereignty to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. What sovereignty is this? Whoever told you we even recognize your existence in Jerusalem? Whoever said we recognize your right to even a single millimeter of the land of Jerusalem? Who said this? You even talk about [having] sovereignty over our hearts, over our faith, over our religion. Who said this? Who can imagine such insanity? This insanity will not end well. It will not end well; it will not lead to anything good. They must understand that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is not a red line. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is a line of fire that will burn any hand that may be extended towards it to harm it.”
