Official PA daily reports on “the national campaign” to oppose pressure from Israel, US and other bodies to cease paying salaries to terrorists

Headline: “The national campaign to resist the theft of the money of the prisoners, Martyr’s families, and wounded was launched”

“Dozens of residents in Ramallah participated in a mass procession yesterday [July 17, 2018], in order to launch the national campaign to resist the theft of the money and allowances (mukhassasat) of the prisoners, the families of the Martyrs (Shahids), and the wounded from the tax revenues (refers to Israeli law to deduct the amount the PA pays in terrorist salaries from taxes collected for the PA –Ed.). The procession was also held in opposition to what is called ‘the deal of the century’ (refers to US President Donald Trump’s as yet unpublished Middle East peace plan –Ed.). Director of [PLO] Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Karake announced the launching of the campaign… which will expand and include the rest of the homeland’s districts and cities [and] capitals and cities around the world, in order to thwart the decision [to deduct the PA tax money].
He emphasized the Palestinian leadership’s opposition to the Israeli blackmail and to the theft of our people’s money by the extremist right-wing occupation government. Karake said that all of the racist laws that the occupation is approving indicate an apartheid regime…
He emphasized that this will not prevent our people from standing by those who have sacrificed for the Palestinian cause.”

Law to deduct terrorist salaries from PA tax money - Israeli law stating that the PA payments to terrorists and the families of dead terrorists is a financial incentive to terror. The law instructs the state to deduct and freeze the amount of money the PA pays in salaries to imprisoned terrorists and families of "Martyrs" from the tax money Israel collects for the PA. Should the PA stop these payments for a full year, the Israeli government would have the option of giving all or part of the frozen money to the PA. The law was enacted on July 2, 2018.
During the parliamentary vote, the law's sponsor Avi Dichter said: “The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee received much help in its deliberations... from Palestinian Media Watch who provided us with authentic data that enabled productive and professional deliberations, nuances that are very difficult to achieve without precise data.” [Israeli Parliament website, July 2, 2018]
