Fatah Movement: “the Balfour Promise was tantamount to the elimination of the Palestinian national identity”

“The Fatah Movement again emphasized that the Balfour Promise (i.e., Declaration) is a historic crime, and a crime of the elimination of the Palestinian people’s political and humanitarian rights in broad daylight. It also demanded that Britain recognize the independent and sovereign State of Palestine whose capital is Jerusalem, as a first sign of a practical apology for the crime that it committed 100 years ago.
In a Fatah statement that was published by the [Fatah] Commission of Information, Culture, and Ideology for the 101st anniversary of the Balfour Promise that occurs every year on November 2, it was stated: ‘The Palestinian people believes in its historical and natural right to its homeland of Palestine, and that the colonialist logic of force that imposed the Balfour Promise and led to the establishment of the colonialist settlement entity on our land will not remain forever.’
Fatah added in its statement: ‘The world understands along with us that the Balfour Promise was tantamount to the elimination of the Palestinian national identity in broad daylight, and did not rely on any legal justification according to international law. We considered and still consider it the basis of the conflict in Palestine, and the beginning of the Palestinian people’s humanitarian tragedy and suffering and the creation of the refugees’ issue.’”
The Balfour Declaration of Nov. 2, 1917 was a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Baron Rothschild stating that “His Majesty's government views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.” In 1922, the League of Nations adopted this and made the British Mandate “responsible for putting into effect the declaration,” which led to the UN vote in 1947 and the establishment of the State of Israel.
