The [Palestinian] National Council (i.e., the legislative body of the PLO) said that the fact that the Israeli occupation authorities closed the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and did not allow holding the Friday prayer there for the first time since 1969 constitutes a crime, a dangerous precedent, and blatant aggression towards the holy sites and the right and freedom of the Palestinians – Muslims and Christians alike – to hold their religious ceremonies.
The [PA] government emphasized that the occupation's steps in Jerusalem constitute acts of terror that are contrary to human norms and values and sabotage the international efforts and American efforts for a renewal of the peace process.
The Fatah Movement emphasized: 'What is happening at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and around it is most severe, and constitutes an attempt to exploit what happened (i.e., the terror attack) in order to execute an Israeli plan that was prepared in advance (refers to a bill to allow both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount, see note below –Ed.), as happened at the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron (The claim being made is that the massacre perpetrated by Baruch Goldstein – see note below - was an Israeli plot meant to create a pretext to divide the Cave of the Patriarchs between Muslims and Jews -Ed.). We completely oppose this, and it cannot be that this will pass under any circumstances.'

Two of the terrorists were shot and killed by other policemen during the attack. The third terrorist was shot and killed while trying to flee.
Green Line - 1949-1967 ceasefire line between Israel and the neighboring Arab countries (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria) following Israel's War of Independence (1948-1949). Land within the Green Line is all part of the State of Israel since 1949. Land outside the Green Line includes East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights.
"Division according to areas and times" refers to a proposed law (May 2013) being reviewed in Israeli Parliament that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount, what the Palestinians call the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza. The law seeks to designate separate prayer times and areas of the site for Muslims and Jews.
However, Israeli PM Netanyahu has stated on many occasions that the Israeli government has no intention of changing the status quo on the Temple Mount, which means Jews are allowed to enter the Temple Mount, but cannot pray there or engage in any type of worship.
Cave of the Patriarchs massacre - On Feb. 25, 1994, Baruch Goldstein, a member of an Israeli far-right movement, opened fire on Muslims praying inside the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, known to Muslims as the "Ibrahimi Mosque," killing 29 and wounding 125. Following the attack, which was widely condemned by Israeli leaders and Jewish communities abroad, the Israeli government took concrete steps to prevent similar attacks from occurring by dividing the area of worship into Muslim and Jewish sections and designating several extremist movements, including Goldstein’s, as illegal terrorist groups.
