Why there is no ‘peace process’

Palestinian Media Watchreports that “a 17-year-old Palestinian terrorist stabbed and murdered a 13-year-old Israeli girl, Hallel Yaffa Ariel, while she slept in her bed. The Palestinian terrorist Muhammad Taraireh, who entered the girl’s home in Kiryat Arba near Hebron, also injured an Israeli security official before he was shot and killed.” The murdered girl was an American citizen, by the way. The report continues:
Fatah’s official Facebook page immediately posted his picture, declaring him a Martyr – “Shahid,” the highest honor achievable in Islam according to the Palestinian Authority.
WAFA, the official PA news agency, likewise honored the terrorist, referring to him as a Martyr – “Shahid.”
According to Palestinian Authority law, the family of today’s murderer will immediately start receiving a monthly PA stipend that the PA pays to the families of all the “Martyrs.”
Do informed observers of the Middle East really think there is no peace because of apartment buildings in Jerusalem? So long as the “good” Palestinians (Fatah) celebrate and reward terrorism, peace is impossible. The Palestinians have created a culture that celebrates death and sees the Jews as illegitimate interlopers, no matter what borders you draw.
The next president should be wary of using her time and political capital on the non-existent “peace process.” She might return to “Fayyadism,” the term referring to the approach popularized by the since-fired Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad. That idea — from a Palestinian — is that the problem is rooted in the economic and civil malfunction in the PA. Condition aid or jawbone the PA into rooting out corruption, ending the anti-Semitic and pro-terrorism culture, creating civil institutions and building a market-based economy. That, plus small modifications on issues such as security crossings that irritate the relationship, would be the most one can hope for. Oh, and fully cooperate to stop the raging violence that began last year, the so-called Stabbing Intifada. It’s long past the time we should stop infantilizing the Palestinians, asking none of them and condoning their perpetual dependence on foreign welfare. If they want a normal state of their own, they must have a normal society.
