Rewriting history
Heritage theft
Rewriting history
Rewriting the history of the Land of Israel in order to deny Israel's right to exist is central to Palestinian Authority (PA) policy. Long before it started the PA terror campaign (the "Intifada," 2000-2005), the PA was fighting a history war – erasing Jewish history and replacing it with a fabricated Palestinian history. This rewriting has two central goals:
1- Erase the Jewish nation's 3,000 year history in the Land of Israel;
2- Invent ancient Palestinian, Muslim and Arab histories in the land.

The goal of this historical revision as a political strategy was first expressed publicly at a conference of Palestinian historians in 1998, when rewriting history was linked to the political goal of denying Israel's right to exist:
"Dr. Yussuf Alzamili [Chairman History Department, Khan Yunis Educational College] called on all universities and colleges to write the history of Palestine and to guard it, and not to enable the [foreign] implants and enemies to distort it or to legitimize the existence of Jews on this land... [History lecturer Abu Amar] clarified that there is no connection between the ancient generation of Jews and the new generation." [Al-Ayyam, Dec. 4, 1998].

Erasing Jewish history in the land of Israel is followed by the PA’s invention of ancient and modern histories that support its political ideology and claim to the land of Israel. The Holocaust and other aspects of Jewish history are alternately denied, downplayed or distorted. Another distortion is to hide from Palestinians that Jesus was a Jew who lived in the Land of Judea/Israel. PA leaders repeatedly define Jesus as a Palestinian who preached Islam, thus denying not only Jewish history, but also the history and legitimacy of Christianity.

Citing numerous examples, this section will document that these and other historical revisions are an integral part of Palestinian policy and are used to create political ideology.
Heritage theft
The PA policy of rewriting history in order to deny Israel’s right to exist is expressed in different ways. As noted above, the PA erases Jewish history and fabricates an ancient Palestinian history in an attempt to delegitimize Israel’s claim to the land. Another expression of this PA policy is the accusation of heritage theft, in which Israel is said to steal Palestinian heritage and history. According to this logic, Israel has no heritage of its own in the land and must therefore resort to stealing Palestinian heritage in order to justify its claim to the land.

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas himself propagated this libel, reported in the PA official daily:
"President Abbas emphasized… ‘We know that they (i.e., Israelis) are trying to change its landmarks, to change our land, and to build over our homes and over the graves of our people, in order to erase the traces of the Palestinian people, but they will not succeed.'” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 1, 2012]

The same accusation was made on PA TV by a newscaster reporting on a folkdance festival in the Ramallah district:
"[The dance groups] are directing a message to the entire world, that the Palestinian nation still retains its identity and its cultural heritage, while Israel attempts to steal this heritage." [PA TV (Fatah), July 15, 2011]

At the same time that the PA promotes the libel of Israeli heritage theft, the PA itself frequently claims Jewish history in the land of Israel as its own. Since the Palestinian Authority was established under the Oslo Accords in 1993, the PA has undertaken a rewriting of history which includes the misappropriation of Jewish history, artifacts, traditions, texts, as if they had a Palestinian historical connection.

In one striking example, the official PA paper claimed that a Hebrew shekel coin from 66 CE was in fact “an ancient Palestinian coin.” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, March 4, 2012] The coin, with ancient Hebrew lettering that reads “Shekel of Israel [Year] 1,” can be seen above.

Similarly, a song broadcast on PA TV mimicked the Jewish biblical expression from Psalms, “If I forget thee, oh Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill” [Psalms 137:5]. The song appropriates Jewish longing for Jerusalem with lyrics that clearly imitate the Jewish biblical verse:
"May my right arm forget me, may my left arm forget me.
May the light of my eyes and the openings of songs forget me, if I forget Jerusalem."
[PA TV (Fatah), March 11, 2012]

This section documents the PA’s mimicking and expropriating of Jewish tradition as well as the libel that Israel steals Palestinian heritage in order to forge a “false” Jewish connection to the land:
Op-ed: Israel law is “a reflection of the principle of theft and robbery as the Israeli regime’s MO since the establishment of the first armed Jewish terrorist organization, but also... of the imperialist state that sponsors Israel (i.e., the US)"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 19, 2019
Excerpt of an op-ed by Muwaffaq Matar, Fatah Revolutionary Council member and regular columnist for the official PA daily

“The occupation government’s decision to implement the law to deduct and freeze money that the Palestinian government pays to the families of the Martyrs (Shahids) and the prisoners… is not only a reflection of the principle of theft and robbery as the Israeli regime’s modus operandi since the establishment of the first armed Jewish terrorist organization, but also a natural reflection of the modus operandi of the imperialist state that sponsors Israel (i.e., the US)… The [Israeli] Cabinet’s decision, on the other hand, is a reflection of a modus operandi of expulsion, settlement, and colonialist occupation, which the white settler invaders implemented on the American continent when they eliminated the original residents, the Indians, by murderous means… The goal here is to make the Palestinian people without identity and without a homeland, without land and an address, and this in itself is the greatest crime of theft in history, exceeding the crime of exterminating the Indians… and the Palestinian who is prevented from returning to his home and land… is killed a thousand times today, at a time when there are human rights laws in the world.”

Fatah official: Cable car in Jerusalem is part of “Judaization” plot to change the city’s nature “through excavations, the theft of history and antiquities”… and creating “facilities for the alleged Temple”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 30, 2019
“The so-called Israeli ‘Infrastructure Committee’ ratified the plan for the cable car in the occupied Old City of Jerusalem that will connect the Mount of Olives to the Al-Buraq [Wall] (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount) plaza (sic., the cable car project is to go up to the Dung Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City... whose goal is to connect East Jerusalem to West [Jerusalem]… The [PA] Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places said that the ratification constitutes clear insistence on Judaizing Jerusalem and its landmarks, and making it foreign to its sacred Arab-Islamic-Christian reality.  Secretary-General of the [Islamic-Christian] Council [for Jerusalem and the Holy Places and Fatah Revolutionary Council member] Hanna Issa noted that this plan is most dangerous, as it has a role in the Judaization of the holy city [Jerusalem], as it completes the Judaization plots that are being carried out on the ground through excavations, the theft of history and antiquities, the construction of settlements, the construction of synagogues, and the establishment of Talmudic (i.e., Jewish) parks. Issa added: ‘The cable car that they intend to establish will lead to the destruction of the holy city’s image, and will make Judaizing changes to it that will overshadow its Arabness.’ He emphasized that these new [Jewish] landmarks and parks are nothing but facilities for the alleged Temple.”

PA TV reporter: Israel “steals” Palestinian dishes, commits “evil assault” to “Judaize our dishes, attributes them to its truly fake identity”
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Jan. 20, 2019

Official PA TV reporter:
“We will get to know this [food] festival and the Palestinian dishes featured at it that we are preserving. The occupation is recently attempting to steal this Palestinian heritage… We are very happy with this festival, whose messages are important in light of the evil assault on our heritage and on all the components of the Palestinian identity…"
Director of the Al-Sham Lands Master Chef Samer Abu Jum’a: “We want to instill knowledge in the young people about the Palestinian cuisine, and to give them a new vision of our Palestinian dishes. Let’s not forget to protect them from Judaization and the evil assault against us, and the theft of Palestinian dishes. A number of dishes have been stolen.” …
Reporter: “What was your impression of the Western world, given that the occupation is attempting to Judaize our dishes and attribute them to its truly fake identity? … Tell me how we can spread the Palestinian dishes more and fight the evil assault on our Palestinian heritage and on the Palestinian dishes, which the occupation is of course attempting to attribute to itself.”

Op-ed: Western colonialism tried to "erase the Palestinian identity, history, and existence" and established Israel "to serve the goals of the capitalist West at the expense of the Jews, who were misled in the name of religion"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 8, 2019
Excerpt of op-ed by Omar Hilmi Al-Ghoul, regular columnist for the official PA daily

"Western colonialism in general, and British colonialism in particular – in cooperation with the Zionist movement, and later with its physical base, the colonialist State of Israel – attempted during the 30 years of the Mandate, from 1917 to 1948, to change the social, demographic, economic, and legal systems on the ground in order to erase the Palestinian identity, history, and existence, and to establish the rogue state [Israel]. This was in order to serve the goals of the capitalist West at the expense of the Jews, who were misled in the name of religion, and in the name of slogans preparing the groundwork for negating the other – such as 'a land without a people for a people without a land,' 'the promised land,' and 'your land, Israel, from the Nile [River] to the Euphrates [River].' Simultaneously, hundreds of thousands of Jewish, Zionist, and other immigrants, some of whom were escaping – to anywhere – from the tragedy and hell of European fascism and Nazism, were brought [to Palestine]… They established the colonialist State of Israel."

PA envoy: “The Palestinian people has been suffering for 70 years from evil plots that have strived to falsify its history, erase its identity, Judaize its holy sites, expropriate its land, [and] steal its natural resources”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 16, 2018
Headline: "The Arab League held the occupation government legally and criminally responsible for its crimes"
"Ambassador of the State of Palestine in Egypt and its Permanent Representative in the Arab League Diab Al-Louh… said to the Arab League extraordinary council at the permanent representative level that the Israeli occupation is continuing to commit crimes against our people in all forms and manners. He noted that the Palestinian people has been suffering for 70 years from evil plots that have strived to falsify its history, erase its identity, Judaize its holy sites, expropriate its land, steal its natural resources, and destroy its social, cultural, and economic infrastructures. The goal of all these criminal plots and of the racist Israeli settlement policy is to erase the Palestinian presence from this land, destroy the elements of the Palestinian people’s resolve in its homeland, and deny the Palestinian person his humanitarian and political rights so that he will remain dependent on the will of the Israeli occupier."
PA Foreign Ministry accuses Israel of stealing archeological artifacts and carrying out “falsification or Judaization” of archeological sites
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 12, 2018
Headline: “The [PA Ministry of] Foreign Affairs and Expatriates demands an international investigation on the issue of antiquities theft by the occupation”
“The [PA] Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates demanded that UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) and the [UN] World Tourism Organization launch a serious investigation on the issue of the Israeli crimes against the Palestinian antiquities, as they are severe violations of international law… The ministry explained yesterday [Nov. 11, 2018] that the investigation would be a prelude to pressure on the occupation authorities to return all of the archaeological items that they have taken over by force, and stopping the falsification or Judaization of these archaeological sites. [The ministry] noted that ‘the settler tourism’ that Israel’s official establishment is organizing, supervising, and funding in cooperation with the settler councils in the occupied West Bank… has escalated recently, and the colonialist mentality is not stopping here, but rather is moving on to also taking over the archaeological and tourist sites, stealing the Palestinian antiquities, and presenting them – both in Israel and outside of it – as ‘antiquities that were found in the West Bank’ in order to establish the occupation’s narrative.”

PA TV: “Israel has not stopped stealing everything that belongs to Palestine and affiliating it with itself, and marketing it as part of its alleged heritage” including snakes, as part of “Judaizing” the land
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Nov. 7, 2018
Official PA TV News, on Israel declaring the Palestine Viper its national snake

Official PA TV newsreader: “In Tel Aviv, what is called the [Israel] ‘Nature [and Parks] Authority’ has announced the Palestine Viper as a national symbol, after calling it the [Land of] Israel Viper. This comes as part of the occupation’s programs that are meant to steal everything Palestinian.”
Official PA TV reporter: "As part of the operation of Judaizing the land of Palestine, the occupation intends to steal the cultural and civilizational heritage, and especially the popular foods and clothing, and the animals' names…  The Israeli Nature Authority announced the change of this snake's name – which is known historically on the Arab and global level as the Palestine Viper that continues to constitute a national symbol from among the symbols of biodiversity in Palestine. Israel has not stopped stealing everything that belongs to Palestine and affiliating it with itself, and marketing it as part of its alleged heritage. It is attempting with all of its might to convince the world that it has the right to Palestine and is rooted in history through its attempts to distort the facts on the ground. Even the snake – whose homeland has been stolen, whose name has been stolen, and who the occupation falsely affiliates with itself – is additional proof of its effort to write its history, even if through theft."

PA TV lies, claims “Palestinian antiquities” at Judean fortress of Herodium
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Sept. 19, 2018

Official PA TV newsreader:
"The occupation authorities continue to falsify and steal Palestinian antiquities at the archaeological site at the Herodium fortress..."
Official PA TV reporter: "The occupation tries to exploit the heritage sites for the benefit of the Israeli narrative: the existence of Jewish history on the land of Palestine. Therefore it is intentionally falsifying the facts, searching for false antiquities in this land, and striving to erase the Arab landmarks that contradict its narrative. Israeli attempts to falsify [the land's] Palestinian character [continue] at this important archaeological site."

Abbas’ advisor: Israel wants to “establish a false racist reality at the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Palestine;” Netanyahu has allowed Israeli MPs to “invade” and “defile” the Al-Aqsa Mosque’s plazas
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 11, 2018
“Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that ‘The occupation state is attempting to invest efforts through all its branches – the security, political, and religious branches – in order to establish a false racist reality at the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Palestine, but this is in vain because their false narrative lacks historical, heritage, and cultural facts in Palestine. In response to a group of extremist settlers engraving what is called ‘the Ten Commandments’ on the stones of the holy site of Hebron (refers to unconfirmed P alestinian reports that Jews engraved the Ten Commandments on a door of the Cave of the Patriarchs –Ed.), Al-Habbash said that this attack is considered a dangerous escalation in the series of daily attacks against the holy sites in Jerusalem and Hebron. This crime represents theft and forgery of our Islamic-Palestinian heritage at our holy sites and our mosques in broad daylight. He added that the series of Israeli crimes against the holy sites has severely escalated due to occupation [Israeli] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to allow the Israeli Parliament members to invade the Al-Aqsa Mosque plazas and defile them (i.e., he lifted his ban on visits; see note below).”

Guest on PA TV accuses Israel of stealing the Palestinian heritage and culture
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, June 28, 2018
Official PA TV program Palestine This Morning, hosting Director of the Palestinian Heritage Center in Bethlehem Maha Saca

Official PA TV host: “First, tell us about your role in preserving the heritage, especially against Israeli theft.”
Director of the Palestinian Heritage Center in Bethlehem Maha Saca:
“…I always say that after Israel stole the land and changed its contours, it didn’t find a heritage with which to defend its presence on this Palestinian land, so it began to steal parts of our heritage – our popular foods, our music, our traditional clothing, and even the Palestinian keffiyeh (i.e., Arab headdress)... This Palestinian keffiyeh has been presented in several Israeli exhibitions and Israeli models and beauty queens have worn it. They have even attempted to distort the significance of the Palestinian keffiyeh, which is a symbol of our Palestinian struggle since the Palestinian uprising. Of course the Palestinian rebels have worn it since 1936. Of course [former PLO and PA Chairman] Yasser Arafat also wore it, and now it has become a symbol for every Palestinian fighter and every supporter of the Palestinian cause. Therefore we need to use this heritage so that it will remain our possession.”
