Rewriting history
Heritage theft
Rewriting history
Rewriting the history of the Land of Israel in order to deny Israel's right to exist is central to Palestinian Authority (PA) policy. Long before it started the PA terror campaign (the "Intifada," 2000-2005), the PA was fighting a history war – erasing Jewish history and replacing it with a fabricated Palestinian history. This rewriting has two central goals:
1- Erase the Jewish nation's 3,000 year history in the Land of Israel;
2- Invent ancient Palestinian, Muslim and Arab histories in the land.

The goal of this historical revision as a political strategy was first expressed publicly at a conference of Palestinian historians in 1998, when rewriting history was linked to the political goal of denying Israel's right to exist:
"Dr. Yussuf Alzamili [Chairman History Department, Khan Yunis Educational College] called on all universities and colleges to write the history of Palestine and to guard it, and not to enable the [foreign] implants and enemies to distort it or to legitimize the existence of Jews on this land... [History lecturer Abu Amar] clarified that there is no connection between the ancient generation of Jews and the new generation." [Al-Ayyam, Dec. 4, 1998].

Erasing Jewish history in the land of Israel is followed by the PA’s invention of ancient and modern histories that support its political ideology and claim to the land of Israel. The Holocaust and other aspects of Jewish history are alternately denied, downplayed or distorted. Another distortion is to hide from Palestinians that Jesus was a Jew who lived in the Land of Judea/Israel. PA leaders repeatedly define Jesus as a Palestinian who preached Islam, thus denying not only Jewish history, but also the history and legitimacy of Christianity.

Citing numerous examples, this section will document that these and other historical revisions are an integral part of Palestinian policy and are used to create political ideology.
Heritage theft
The PA policy of rewriting history in order to deny Israel’s right to exist is expressed in different ways. As noted above, the PA erases Jewish history and fabricates an ancient Palestinian history in an attempt to delegitimize Israel’s claim to the land. Another expression of this PA policy is the accusation of heritage theft, in which Israel is said to steal Palestinian heritage and history. According to this logic, Israel has no heritage of its own in the land and must therefore resort to stealing Palestinian heritage in order to justify its claim to the land.

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas himself propagated this libel, reported in the PA official daily:
"President Abbas emphasized… ‘We know that they (i.e., Israelis) are trying to change its landmarks, to change our land, and to build over our homes and over the graves of our people, in order to erase the traces of the Palestinian people, but they will not succeed.'” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 1, 2012]

The same accusation was made on PA TV by a newscaster reporting on a folkdance festival in the Ramallah district:
"[The dance groups] are directing a message to the entire world, that the Palestinian nation still retains its identity and its cultural heritage, while Israel attempts to steal this heritage." [PA TV (Fatah), July 15, 2011]

At the same time that the PA promotes the libel of Israeli heritage theft, the PA itself frequently claims Jewish history in the land of Israel as its own. Since the Palestinian Authority was established under the Oslo Accords in 1993, the PA has undertaken a rewriting of history which includes the misappropriation of Jewish history, artifacts, traditions, texts, as if they had a Palestinian historical connection.

In one striking example, the official PA paper claimed that a Hebrew shekel coin from 66 CE was in fact “an ancient Palestinian coin.” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, March 4, 2012] The coin, with ancient Hebrew lettering that reads “Shekel of Israel [Year] 1,” can be seen above.

Similarly, a song broadcast on PA TV mimicked the Jewish biblical expression from Psalms, “If I forget thee, oh Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill” [Psalms 137:5]. The song appropriates Jewish longing for Jerusalem with lyrics that clearly imitate the Jewish biblical verse:
"May my right arm forget me, may my left arm forget me.
May the light of my eyes and the openings of songs forget me, if I forget Jerusalem."
[PA TV (Fatah), March 11, 2012]

This section documents the PA’s mimicking and expropriating of Jewish tradition as well as the libel that Israel steals Palestinian heritage in order to forge a “false” Jewish connection to the land:
Abbas' Advisor: Israel denies Jerusalem's "Arab and Islamic character" and attempts "to force... the Jewish character" on it
Source: WAFA news agency, Feb. 11, 2015
Headline: "Al-Habbash demands that UNESCO intervene to prevent the falsification of the facts and history in Jerusalem"
"Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari'ah Judge and the President's [Mahmoud Abbas'] Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, demanded today [Feb. 11, 2015], that UNESCO urgently and immediately intervene to prevent the Israeli occupation from falsifying the facts and destroying the human heritage in Jerusalem. In a press release, Al-Habbash warned of the severity of the escalatory measure implemented by the Israeli occupation municipality crews, in placing a sign in Arabic, Hebrew and English calling the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque 'the Temple of Solomon' near the Inspector's Gate (Council Gate) [parenthesis in source], one of the gates of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Habbash said that Israel's changing of names in the Holy City is a kind of intentional falsification of history and heritage, and a desperate attempt to deny the [city's] Arab and Islamic character and force a new, invented character - the Jewish character. He noted that this was a most dangerous step, heralding grave consequences. Al-Habbash explained that, despite the Judaization actions carried out by the Israeli occupation government and its various branches against Jerusalem, and despite the attempts to eradicate its Arab and Islamic characteristics and the continuing land expropriation and construction of settlements on its land, this will not change the fact that it [Jerusalem] is the religious, political and spiritual capital of Palestine, to which the Jews have no right."

Source: Palestine News Network (PNN, independent Palestinian news agency), Feb. 2, 2015
Headline: “Fatah: The transformation of the New Gate into an Israeli tourist area represents an additional aspect of [Israel’s] Judaization policy
“In a statement published today, Fatah’s official spokesman in Jerusalem, Raafat Alayan, said that the Israeli occupation’s announcement of the plan to turn the New Gate [of the Old City] into a tourist and commercial area was part of the strengthening of the Judaization policy and the theft of the [Palestinian] cultural heritage… Alayan called on the international community in general, and on the World Heritage Committee in particular, to act immediately towards stopping this crime, which constitutes one in a series of steps with which the occupation authorities are striving, one by one, to extend their control over the Old City and to cut it off from its surroundings, in order to arrive, in the end, at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, to revive their myth of the existence of the alleged Temple.”
Ramallah Governor: Israel steals Palestinian dress for fashion shows and airline uniforms, just as Israel stole the land
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 31, 2015

"District Governor of Ramallah and El-Bireh Laila Ghannam... receiv[ed] the Liberty Bell from [Philadelphia] City Council member Maria Sanchez in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, [USA] yesterday [Jan. 30, 2015]... In addition, Ghannam received a Citation of Honor, which has never been awarded to any Arab leader or citizen before, in recognition of her impact and her extraordinary actions for her nation and her cause, and her influence within her society and in the world... [Ghannam] made it clear that the land of Palestine was the cradle of love and peace, noting that Jesus was Palestinian, and that tolerance is one of the Palestinians' most prominent principles." Ghannam gave the parliamentary representative [City Councilwoman Maria Sanchez] a memento from the Palestinian heritage, and noted that this is our heritage, identity and the legacy of our ancestors. She also noted that the occupation (i.e., PA euphemism for Israel) was trying to steal it by using it in Israeli fashion shows and for the uniforms of the Israeli airline attendants. Ghannam clarified that stealing is their [the Israelis'] conduct, as they have stolen the land, and are now trying to rob all that is Palestinian, without anything to stop their savagery, criminality and unrestrained terrorism."

Israel “attempts to eradicate Arab and Islamic identity” in Jerusalem
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 27, 2015
“Secretary-General of the Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places Hanna Issa said that Israel had allocated 17 billion dollars for the Judaization of the Holy City [Jerusalem], and noted that the occupation had succeeded in building an entire city beneath the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which includes seven tunnels and halls that can hold 5,000 people. In addition, he stressed that the occupation does as it pleases in the Holy City, without any consideration for the Arab and Islamic world. Issa spoke during a political conference organized by the [PA] Ministry of Information under the title, ‘Jerusalem and the Judaization Policy,’ held in the presence of and with the patronage of Tulkarem District Governor Issam Abu Bakr, Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida'is, Secretary-General of the Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places Dr. Hanna Issa and Deputy Minister of Communications Mahmoud Khalifa… [Minister] Ida'is addressed the suffering of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the attempts to eradicate their Arab and Islamic identity and the Judaization policy that began in 1967 with the aim of rebuilding the so-called ‘alleged Temple.’”
PA Jerusalem Council: Israel attempts "to falsify and distort the facts regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque"
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, Nov. 26, 2014
“The Supreme Muslim Council and the [PA’s] Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places stressed their firm opposition to the occupation’s proposed law, which prohibits Ribat (religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) at the Al-Aqsa Mosque... In addition, the statement noted that ‘the occupation has placed signs on the outer gates of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, bearing foreign Hebrew names and terms, which have nothing to do with the Al-Aqsa Mosque.’ The statement emphasized the ‘rejection of the Hebrew names and terms that are foreign to the gates of the Al-Aqsa Mosque – foreign Judaizing names that distort the eternal truth, according to which this place is sacred to Muslims alone, and we will not accept or recognize them!’ The statement called for the removal of the signs the occupation placed on the outer gates... In addition, [the Councils] emphasized that ‘the Jews have no right to even a single grain of earth at the Al-Aqsa Mosque,’ and that ‘the occupation authorities are attempting to falsify and distort the facts regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque.’"

Abbas’ Advisor: Israel seeks to “eradicate” Palestinian identity and create “an illegal Jewish entity”
Source: WAFA news agency, Nov. 23, 2014
“Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, said that Arabs and Muslims around the globe, especially those with foreign citizenship, must go to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and come together to Jerusalem to support the resolve of its residents. During a political forum held at the embassy of the State of Palestine in Algeria, Al-Habbash said: ‘Our people is now in the last stage of a war of existence and self-coercion against the occupation, which is seeking in any way possible to eradicate our identity, force a Caesarian birth of a Jewish entity and clone an illegal entity at our expense.’… In addition, he emphasized that the occupation – which thinks it has succeeded in winning the geographic war with [its] racist fences and roadblocks and that it will have the last word in the fairy tale of Jewish Jerusalem by taking over the Al-Aqsa Mosque – must be opposed.”
Israeli “attacks” on Al-Aqsa Mosque are part of plan to change Jerusalem’s “Palestinian Arab character”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 29, 2014
“[PA] President Mahmoud Abbas presided over a meeting of the Supreme Committee for Jerusalem Affairs yesterday evening, in the presence of Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah. The [participants] discussed the latest developments in occupied Jerusalem, especially the settlers’ continuous invasions of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque. The participants warned of the gravity of Israel’s actions and unceasing attacks and discussed ways to strengthen the resolve of the Palestinian residents in the Holy City and to fight the Israeli violations, whose goal is to cause the Palestinian people to emigrate from Jerusalem and to change its Palestinian Arab character. They warned that the continuation of these provocative attacks and violations would lead to a deterioration of the situation and to an intensification of the cycle of violence, the results of which cannot be foreseen – if Israel continues to allow extremist Jews to continuously invade the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Sept. 28, 2014
Official PA TV News report on the Judaization of Jerusalem
Official PA TV reporter: “This is a total war to uproot the indigenous owners and children of this land by various means of exile. PA official: Israel stole our water, air, and land, and now El Al steals our clothing
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 14, 2014
“District Governor of Ramallah and El-Bireh Laila Ghannam… emphasized that Jerusalem and Palestine are in need [of the help of] every Arab, because the occupation has stolen the water, air and land, and is now even trying to steal the [Palestinian] heritage, since the Israeli airline El Al flight attendants wear Palestinian garments.”
PA Ministry of Culture accuses Israel of "Zionist... schemes to destroy the Palestinian cause and steal its history and identity"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 13, 2014
“The [PA] Ministry of Culture in Tulkarem organized a screening of several documentary films to mark the 66th anniversary of the Nakba (i.e., ‘the catastrophe,’ Palestinian term for the establishment of the State of Israel) at the Al -Fadeliyah High School for Boys, in the presence of Culture Ministry Bureau Chief Muntasir Al-Kam and school principal Muhammad Abd Al-Latif.
[School principal] Abd Al-Latif said: ‘This anniversary proves to us that the refugee camps are temporary and that we will return to the places from which we were expelled. We will return to our land from which we were expelled when the so-called State of Israel was established.’
[Culture Ministry Bureau Chief Muntasir] Al-Kam noted that the screening took place as part of the [Culture] Ministry’s program to encourage the audio-visual field through the screening of documentary films at various national and cultural events, since these films are a part of resistance on the ideological level, at a time when the Zionist entity’s schemes to destroy the Palestinian cause and steal its history and identity – and not just the land – are gaining momentum.”
Official PA daily: Construction of synogagues "constitutes a base for targeting the [Al-Aqsa] Mosque‎"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 1, 2014
‎“At its meeting yesterday [March 31, 2014], ‎the Objections Subcommittee of the ‎District Planning and Construction ‎Committee approved the construction of ‎the Tiferet Israel synagogue in the heart of ‎the Old City of occupied Jerusalem, a ‎mere 200 meters from the Al-Aqsa ‎Mosque…‎
The Al-Aqsa Institute for Islamic Trusts ‎and Heritage said in a statement that the ‎occupation has, so far, constructed ‎approximately 100 synagogues and ‎yeshivas (religious studies academies) in ‎the Old City of occupied Jerusalem and its ‎environs, with the aim of completely ‎Judaizing the Old City within the next 20 ‎years…‎
The Institute said that many senior Israeli ‎officials have had a part in the incitement ‎against Al-Aqsa, either through planning ‎the construction of synagogues or ‎planning the destruction of the Mosque, ‎since synagogues constitute a base for ‎targeting the Mosque. He noted that the ‎occupation has, in recent years, ‎constructed two large synagogues: the ‎‎‘Hurva Synagogue,’ constructed on the ‎ruins of a mosque and an Islamic Trust in ‎the Al-Sharaf neighborhood (i.e., The ‎Jewish Quarter), and the Beit Yitzhak (i.e., ‎Ohel Yitzhak) Synagogue.”‎
From WAFA, official PA news agency

Note: ‎The Tiferet Israel, Hurva and Ohel Yitzhak ‎synagogues are reconstructions of 19th ‎century synagogues that were destroyed in ‎‎1948 or during the period of Jordanian rule ‎between 1948 and 1967. Contrary to the claims made in the ‎above item, no mosque existed on the site of the Hurva Synagogue. For more information about the synagogues, click "full article."

Palestinian official accuses Israel of trying to “falsify history and steal” Palestinian heritage
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 26, 2014
“District Governor of Tubas and the Northern Jordan Valley Rabih Al-Khandaqji opened the Palestinian Heritage exhibit in the village of Al-Aqaba yesterday [Feb. 25, 2014], as part of the national campaign, ‘The History of the Land from Grandfather to Grandson,’ which was organized by the Ma’an Development Center and the British Cultural Council, in coordination with the districts. The [campaign’s] aim is to protect and preserve the [Palestinian] cultural heritage and disseminate it in the region and the world, in light of the Israeli attempts to falsify and steal it…
Al-Khandaqji praised the organizations and institutions participating in the exhibit for their work, and said that the large numbers of public figures from the district in the village of Al-Aqaba expresses the national and popular consensus regarding the history of our people and the protection of its [history], as well as regarding [its] refusal of the occupation’s continuing attempts to falsify history and to steal the culture and heritage of the ancient Palestinian people. He also said: ‘We must muster our strength to protect our heritage, our history and our land against the actions of the occupation, which aims to erase [our] historic characteristics.’”
Abbas spokesman accuses Israel of “falsifying history” and erasing Palestinian memory

“Official spokesperson for the President [Abbas], Nabil Abu Rudeina said: ‘The Israeli government is not satisfied with falsifying history but [also] asks the Palestinian people, its leadership and institutions to succumb to one of the greatest acts of falsification in history, to conceal the truth, to falsify its national awareness and erase its memory, that memory, which we inherited and which we will bequeath to our children, generation after generation.’”
Official PA daily denies ancient Jewish connection to Israel while falsely claiming ancient Palestinian heritage
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Dec. 17, 2013
Op-ed by Dr. As’ad ‎ Abd Al-Rahman, ‎regular columnist for Al-Hayat Al-Jadida
‎“The debate surrounding the identity of ‎the ‘State of Israel’ and the identity of its ‎citizens since its establishment in 1948 is ‎still ongoing, and ‘Israel’ may well be the ‎only [country] in the world that refuses to ‎grant its name as a national identity to its ‎citizens.‎
The real reasons for the disagreement in ‎Israel about a citizenship that would ‎define the national identity of the state ‎and its citizens, from among the national ‎identities offered – Israeli, Jewish and ‎Hebrew – arise from huge historical, legal ‎and religious obstacles, which prevent ‎Israeli identity from being used as the ‎national identity of the Zionist state and its ‎citizens… ‎
Genetic ‎analysis, scientifically revealed that the ‎European Ashkenazi Jews, who adopted ‎the Jewish religion in the 7th century CE, ‎are from the Aryan race, and have no ‎connection to Semites...‎
‎The Oriental Talmud of the Oriental Jews ‎who converted the Ashkenazim from their ‎pagan religion to Judaism, is the ‎‎‘Palestinian Talmud, [or] Jerusalem ‎Talmud.’ ‎
This Talmud was written thousands of ‎years ago, ‘in the ancient Palestinian ‎Jewish Aramaic language,’ meaning the ‎language of the Canaanite Palestinians. ‎It’s enough for us to know that the name ‎of the Israeli newspaper, The Jerusalem ‎Post, was, from its founding in 1932 until ‎the establishment of the Zionist state in ‎‎1948, The Palestine Post.’”‎

PA minister: Western Wall is part of Al-Aqsa Mosque and belongs to Muslims by right
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Dec. 6, 2013
PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: "Jerusalem is religion's trust and history's trust in the hands of all Muslims, in the hands of this Ummah (Islamic Nation). We are Muhammad's heirs. It is we who inherited Jerusalem, by its being conquered religiously through the Prophet [Muhammad]'s will, and later by [Islam] actually conquering it [in 683]. We are its inheritors and it belongs to us and to no one else. Visit Jerusalem. We, as Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims, must visit the Al-Buraq Wall. The Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount) is an authentic part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque only... It [the Wall] is our right, it is our permanent right. It is part of our Al-Aqsa [Mosque], without intending to harm the rights of others in any way, and without harming the rights of others. Freedom of worship in our Jerusalem is guaranteed to all... We do not dispute anyone's traditions, and we do not dispute anyone's religion. Nonetheless, we have rights, principles and positions that cannot possibly be altered."

University official to Israel: Israel tries to steal Palestinian heritage and land
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Nov. 16, 2013
PA TV program Palestine This Morning interviewed Activities Coordinator at the An-Najah National University’s Faculty of Humanities, Dr. Jaber Khdeir about the Museum of Folklore and Ancient Tools that was built under the university’s auspices.
Dr. Jaber Khdeir: “The Israeli occupation is trying to steal this [Palestinian] heritage. Trying to steal the Palestinian land and the [identity of the] the Palestinian man. And we tell everyone that the land of Palestine [is] the land where, first of all, human culture was born. In this way we tell the Israeli occupier: ‘You have no legacy in this land, you have no existence in this land. We, the Palestinians, built this land, built these cities. The Palestinian human being is a creator of industry, a creator of agriculture, a creator of cities, and creator of culture. The agriculture was created in Palestine. The first ten cities built in the world are in Palestine.’ That is why we say that it is the Palestinian human being who created this culture 6,500 years ago. These Jews have no existence on this Palestinian land. They were passers-by and they will continue to be passers-by.”
