Rewriting history
Heritage theft
Rewriting history
Rewriting the history of the Land of Israel in order to deny Israel's right to exist is central to Palestinian Authority (PA) policy. Long before it started the PA terror campaign (the "Intifada," 2000-2005), the PA was fighting a history war – erasing Jewish history and replacing it with a fabricated Palestinian history. This rewriting has two central goals:
1- Erase the Jewish nation's 3,000 year history in the Land of Israel;
2- Invent ancient Palestinian, Muslim and Arab histories in the land.

The goal of this historical revision as a political strategy was first expressed publicly at a conference of Palestinian historians in 1998, when rewriting history was linked to the political goal of denying Israel's right to exist:
"Dr. Yussuf Alzamili [Chairman History Department, Khan Yunis Educational College] called on all universities and colleges to write the history of Palestine and to guard it, and not to enable the [foreign] implants and enemies to distort it or to legitimize the existence of Jews on this land... [History lecturer Abu Amar] clarified that there is no connection between the ancient generation of Jews and the new generation." [Al-Ayyam, Dec. 4, 1998].

Erasing Jewish history in the land of Israel is followed by the PA’s invention of ancient and modern histories that support its political ideology and claim to the land of Israel. The Holocaust and other aspects of Jewish history are alternately denied, downplayed or distorted. Another distortion is to hide from Palestinians that Jesus was a Jew who lived in the Land of Judea/Israel. PA leaders repeatedly define Jesus as a Palestinian who preached Islam, thus denying not only Jewish history, but also the history and legitimacy of Christianity.

Citing numerous examples, this section will document that these and other historical revisions are an integral part of Palestinian policy and are used to create political ideology.
Heritage theft
The PA policy of rewriting history in order to deny Israel’s right to exist is expressed in different ways. As noted above, the PA erases Jewish history and fabricates an ancient Palestinian history in an attempt to delegitimize Israel’s claim to the land. Another expression of this PA policy is the accusation of heritage theft, in which Israel is said to steal Palestinian heritage and history. According to this logic, Israel has no heritage of its own in the land and must therefore resort to stealing Palestinian heritage in order to justify its claim to the land.

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas himself propagated this libel, reported in the PA official daily:
"President Abbas emphasized… ‘We know that they (i.e., Israelis) are trying to change its landmarks, to change our land, and to build over our homes and over the graves of our people, in order to erase the traces of the Palestinian people, but they will not succeed.'” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 1, 2012]

The same accusation was made on PA TV by a newscaster reporting on a folkdance festival in the Ramallah district:
"[The dance groups] are directing a message to the entire world, that the Palestinian nation still retains its identity and its cultural heritage, while Israel attempts to steal this heritage." [PA TV (Fatah), July 15, 2011]

At the same time that the PA promotes the libel of Israeli heritage theft, the PA itself frequently claims Jewish history in the land of Israel as its own. Since the Palestinian Authority was established under the Oslo Accords in 1993, the PA has undertaken a rewriting of history which includes the misappropriation of Jewish history, artifacts, traditions, texts, as if they had a Palestinian historical connection.

In one striking example, the official PA paper claimed that a Hebrew shekel coin from 66 CE was in fact “an ancient Palestinian coin.” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, March 4, 2012] The coin, with ancient Hebrew lettering that reads “Shekel of Israel [Year] 1,” can be seen above.

Similarly, a song broadcast on PA TV mimicked the Jewish biblical expression from Psalms, “If I forget thee, oh Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill” [Psalms 137:5]. The song appropriates Jewish longing for Jerusalem with lyrics that clearly imitate the Jewish biblical verse:
"May my right arm forget me, may my left arm forget me.
May the light of my eyes and the openings of songs forget me, if I forget Jerusalem."
[PA TV (Fatah), March 11, 2012]

This section documents the PA’s mimicking and expropriating of Jewish tradition as well as the libel that Israel steals Palestinian heritage in order to forge a “false” Jewish connection to the land:
PA Minister of Foreign Affairs: Israel “steals antiquities” and “tries to falsify the region’s history”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 12, 2013
“[PA] Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad Al-Malki said during the State of Palestine’s speech at the General Conference of the [UN’s] Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, that… the Israeli occupation… steals antiquities and cultural assets and tries to falsify the region’s history and its historical facts by continuing illegal excavations in the Old City of Jerusalem and in additional places in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.”
PA Foreign Minister at UNESCO: Israel steals archeological finds

“[PA] Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad Al-Malki said in a speech on behalf of the State of Palestine at the General Conference of the [UN’s] Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, that… the Israeli occupation commits major transgressions of International law… and steals [archeological] remnants and cultural assets, and tries to falsify the region’s history and its historical facts by continuing illegal excavations in the Old City of Jerusalem and in additional places in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.”
PA Minister: Israel “uses forgery and fabrication” to give Jerusalem a “Jewish character”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 30, 2013
“Minister of Jerusalem Affairs and District Governor [of Jerusalem] Adnan Al-Husseini briefed Australian Representative to the Palestinian Authority Tom Wilson … on Jerusalem’s and its residents’ situation, and explained that the arbitrary steps being taken by the occupation authorities have led to a paralysis of life in the holy city. He noted that the Israeli authorities are pushing their people to the abyss with the systematic desecration of holy Islamic and Christian sites, specifically the Al-Aqsa Mosque, while obviously ignoring the significance of this holy place for more than a billion Muslims. He further said that they use forgery and fabrication methods to alter the historical and religious facts, in order to actualize their false statements about the [city’s] Jewish character…
He explained that this systematic policy aims to make the city’s original residents emigrate, [both] Muslims and Christians.”
Israel attempts to “destroy” or “steal” Palestinian national heritage, including the keffiyeh
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 7, 2013
“Today is Palestinian Heritage Day, which is marked each year on October 7... The [PA] Ministry of Culture said in an announcement in honor of the event: ‘Our return to our heritage is a national duty and part of our long and arduous journey towards building a Palestinian state with original roots.’
It [the Ministry] added: ‘One after the other, colonialists and occupiers came at us, and our fathers had to struggle in order to remain, and we stand firm facing an occupier who attempts to destroy our national heritage, forge or steal it, thinking that stripping a nation of its heritage means making its national identity disappear and making its feelings of belonging to its homeland abate, and in this way eases [the process of] displacing and exiling it. Therefore, the battle to protect the heritage is at the heart of the overall conflict to remain, like the battle to defend lands, homes and the entire homeland.’
In addition, it [the Ministry] declared that it ‘would give special importance to Heritage Day this year by conducting programs and activities, in cooperation with our cultural and national organizations, that will assist the Popular Heritage Service and [assist] in protecting and guarding it (the heritage).’
The announcement noted that heritage in Palestine has been a victim of robbery, forgery, theft and obliteration for hundreds of years by Israel’s perpetual attempts to forge facts, steal the heritage and claim it unlawfully as its own.
Likewise, Zionization and Judaization of anything Palestinian is taking place, especially in Jerusalem and in the occupation’s territories of 1948 (i.e., Israel), such as [the Judaization of] clothing, food and songs. Even the Palestinian keffiyeh (Arab headdress) is presented in exhibitions as Israeli clothing, and so even Palestinian clothing is exhibited as Israeli clothing.”
PA Deputy Minister of Tourism: Israel tries to change Jerusalem’s “historical Arab character”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Sept. 11, 2013
“(PA) Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Hamdan Taha said… that ‘Jerusalem is the region that is harmed the most by (antiquities) theft and looting,’ and added; ‘Israel is trying to alter its [Jerusalem’s] religious and historical Arab character by the many excavations it conducts, by tunneling and by providing misleading and false information about the holy city.’”

Ma’an publishes different accounts of same story; accuses Israel of “archaeological forgery”
Source: Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, Sept. 10, 2013
On the same day, the independent Palestinian news agency Ma’an posted two articles-- one in English and one in Arabic-- about ancient Jewish artifacts found near the Temple Mount. While the English article reported only the Israeli archaeologists’ announcement about the find, the Arabic article quoted the Israeli Arab Al-Aqsa Institute for Islamic Trusts and Heritage in denying the authenticity of the find. The Arabic article further libeled Israel, claiming that Israeli archaeologists frequently plant forged artifacts in excavation sites for the purpose of “Judaizing the history of the area.”
Ma’an’s Arabic article, translated to English by PMW:

“The [Israeli Arab] Al-Aqsa Institute for Islamic Trusts and Heritage asserted: ‘Attempts to falsify archaeological artifacts and Islamic and Arab culture, for which the Israeli occupation branches led by the Israeli Antiquities Authority are responsible, are no more than plots and frauds that contradict the truth and whose purpose is to turn reality on the ground upside down.’ The institute was referring to archaeological finds [that include] a gold medallion with a Jewish menorah (candelabra) engraved on it, which they [the Israelis] said belongs to the Byzantine period...
In the statement, a copy of which reached Ma’an, the [Al-Aqsa] Institute [for Islamic Trusts and Heritage] said: ‘The falsification campaigns led by archeologists who answer to the Antiquities Authority are invalid and have been politicized. Their purpose is to prove the existence of an imagined Jewish heritage by excavations in the vicinity of the Umayyad palaces… The occupation agencies and the Antiquities Authority are carrying out a crazed operation to distort history and falsify culture.'

Israel “falsified” Jerusalem’s “features and imposed an alleged history”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 31, 2013
Op-ed by Alaa Hantash:
“I wasn’t surprised that five schools in occupied Jerusalem started teaching the Israeli curriculum in some of their classes. On the contrary, I even foresee that the situation will grow worse and that the number will grow to 50, because for a long time now there have been warnings about this step, which is a crime against humanity and not just against our people and its history. This curriculum falsifies history openly and in broad daylight, and works to destroy the Palestinian identity and bury it while still alive in our children’s minds, as it falsified the city’s features and imposed an alleged history on them before our very eyes and ears. We can do nothing but stick out our tongue to denounce and condemn, saying; ‘Jerusalem will remain Arab-Palestinian and you cannot detract from its Arabness!’
Over the past decades all of our Jerusalem strongholds have fallen, and not one remains resolute against the battle of Judaization, except for the education stronghold, and here it is starting to fall before our eyes.
Even the weapon of denunciation is left dumbfounded this time, and on all levels – despite the many authorities who are concerned about occupied Jerusalem, including their staffs and modest budgets, and who are supposed to be rallying [support from] the whole world against this crime, rather than [allowing] the world to sit idly by.
The occupation authorities turned several neighborhoods in Jerusalem into drug dens, and we said; ‘Our nation still remains resolute and maintains its principles!’ They altered the city’s features and its Arab nature, and we said; ‘Jerusalem’s identity will remain Arab!’ And in several years, when we ask where the Al-Aqsa Mosque is located, one of our children will say, ‘On the Temple Mount.’”
Israel Judaizes Jerusalem and tries “to rob the Muslim man and his heritage”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 17, 2013
“Secretary-General of the [Palestinian] National Commission for Education, Culture and Science Ismail Tellawi said that the [Jerusalem Summer Nights] Festival is being held for the fifth consecutive year thanks to the effort of Jerusalem’s youth. [It is held] as an expression of Jerusalem’s culture and in order to protect Jerusalem’s identity and heritage in particular, and Palestinian nationalism in general, from the Israeli occupation’s arrogance and Judaizing steps that try to rob the Muslim man and his heritage.” From WAFA, official PA news agency
Israeli “scientific institutes” invent “a false history” in Jerusalem
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 14, 2013
Op-ed by Mahmoud Shuqeir:
“We have grown accustomed to improvising and we have no systematic plans for protecting the holy city. This makes me tend to believe that the many organizations rushing in to protect the city are [really] immersed in bureaucratic, office work and only pay little attention to what should be done for the city…
Apparently, we make do with televised announcements about our hold on the city and our concern for its Arab identity and the resolve of the Christians and Muslims in it, and do not take practical, planned steps all year round for this purpose.
This, while the Israeli occupiers do more, and they have scientific institutes that invest efforts in creating a false history and various facts for this city that was Jebusite-Canaanite-Arab-Palestinian, and will remain such, despite our negligence in fulfilling our duty to the best of our abilities.
It will remain as such thanks to truth, logic and history and thanks to the city itself that defeated all invaders throughout the ages. The invaders were defeated and they disappeared, while the city remained alive, shimmering and able to come back to life after every time it was destroyed by the invaders.”
Israeli efforts to rename the “Palestine sunbird” is heritage theft, like Israeli theft of falafel
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 4, 2013
Op-ed by Imtiyaz Diab:
Headline: “The Palestine Sunbird”
[The writer reports that an Israeli commission has sent requests to international organizations to change the name of a bird now called the “Palestine Sunbird” and begin calling it the ”Orange Sunbird”.]
“’Orange Sunbird’! That’s what [Israel] wants to call it! It wants to kidnap [the bird] from us, and it has set up a special commission to promote the name change. This commission has sent letters to all international unions and organizations that deal with nature, in order to pressure them into changing the name…
Nothing will deter Israel from changing the bird’s name, and its authorities are still working to have the name changed in the registries of international institutions – just as it did with the Palestinian embroidery that it presented to western Ambassadors as if it were part of its own heritage, and just as it did with the falafel that it serves on its holidays and at its celebrations, as a blue and white flag waves over the [falafel] balls.”
Israel attempts “to steal Jerusalem’s history, culture and heritage"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 29, 2013
Headline: “The Islamic-Christian Council warns of a massacre in the form of the demolition of 450 Jerusalem homes”
“The Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places warned yesterday [May 28, 2013] that the occupation’s authorities intend to formulate a systematic policy to implement demolition orders for 450 homes in occupied East Jerusalem. It noted that occupation authorities have demolished over 25,000 homes in the Palestinian territories since the occupation in 1967 and that since the beginning of the year, 40 homes have been demolished in occupied Jerusalem alone.
The council stated that the overall objective of the occupation authorities and governments for generations has been to empty the holy city of its original residents, to draw as many radical settlers to it and settle them in it. This is done in order to obscure the city’s Arab-Palestinian character, to Judaize every part of it and to steal Jerusalem’s history, culture and heritage, so that it will become the unified capital of the Jews and the State of Israel.”
Abbas rep: Israel attempts to “destroy the holy, archeological and historic sites” and "erase ancient national history”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 12, 2013
Headline: “Al-Ta’awun held a ceremony to lay the cornerstone for the ‘Palestinian Museum’ project in Bir Zeit”
“Yesterday, [Thursday April 11, 2013,] the Al-Ta’awun Institute conducted a ceremony laying the cornerstone of the ‘Palestinian Museum’ project in the village of Bir Zeit north of Ramallah. In a speech on behalf of the President of the Palestinian state Mahmoud Abbas, Presidential Bureau Chief Hussein Al-A'araj stressed the importance of the project which he considered ‘a glorious, important, national structure that makes concrete the strong national will to protect Palestine’s name and its national and cultural heritage’ …
Similarly, he [Al-A'araj] was of the opinion that the general Israeli attempts to destroy the holy, archeological and historic sites, and to incorporate the walls of Jerusalem, the Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque (i.e., Rachel’s Tomb) in Bethlehem, and other [sites] under the so-called ‘Israel Antiquities Authority’, are [all] part of the [Israeli] activities to erase ancient [Palestinian] national history. He also declared that everything found on this land is evidence of its antiquity and its ancient and indisputable connection to Islam and Christianity.”
Abbas representative: Israel forges Jerusalem’s heritage to make it “conform to their myths, claims and phony fables”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 3, 2013
Excerpt from the speech delivered by Abd Al-Rahim representing President Mahmoud Abbas at the opening ceremony of the ‘Jerusalem, Eternal City of Arab Culture’ events:
"…Declaring Jerusalem as an eternal capital of culture provides a strengthening of, and a natural, cultural and historical way of emphasizing the cultural situation in the holy city… This obligates us to double the efforts made to preserve the city’s Muslim-Christian Arab identity and culture…
The harm done to Jerusalem’s historical and cultural identity has received an additional and deeper dimension: The forgery of the city’s religious heritage and the attempt to blur and erase it by forcing it to conform to their [the Jews’] myths, claims and phony fables... We know how the Israeli authorities enlist intellectuals from different fields; artists, historians, and academics and host them each year so that they will write and compose stories and tales about their dreams regarding the holy city, for the purpose of molding their imaginary narrative and spreading their claim, which is disproved by reality…
In the name of Jerusalem, its residents and his Excellency the President [Abbas], I salute you and thank you and welcome your efforts once more for opening these events. We declare from here, from this place overlooking our Jerusalem, that Jerusalem will remain Palestinian-Arab. We will protect its identity with our lives and blood. These occupiers – besieging it now – must learn their lesson... Know that while you learned to love it by force through fairytales, we nursed our love for it with our mothers’ milk. You will recognize the truth just as did the invaders who preceded you, for we hold the right, Jerusalem is ours and we will restore its eternal splendor among us, as it has been throughout history.’”

PA TV teaches children that Israel steals Palestinian folklore and games

PA TV children's program The Best Home:
PA TV host: "And of course we will never forget that we have land that was occupied in 1948 (the establishment of the State of Israel), which will return to us one day. Remember well, children. Also [remember] to safeguard our folklore, our national games, the folklore in all its forms, our dress and our food and our games and anything that forms the Palestinian folklore - we have to safeguard it. If we don't safeguard it, then the occupation might steal it as well, as it stole our land. Right? Do you agree with me? Bravo!"

Israel “erase[s] Palestinian identity” by stealing Palestinian garb and foods
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 12, 2013
From an article by Sabri Saidam about the death of the founding fathers of the “Palestinian revolution.”
“They (i.e., the founding fathers of the Palestinian revolution) die when Israel tries to erase the Palestinian identity and our cultural heritage through a grievous attempt to erase history and geography, and when its [Israel’s] airline stewardesses don Palestinian garb, and when our popular foods are marketed in the world as if they were of Israeli origin.”
PA radio: Israel forges history - even the “6-sided star” (i.e., Jewish star) is actually Islamic
Source: The Voice of Palestine, official PA radio station, Dec. 1, 2012
PA radio program From Jerusalem discusses the Israeli excavations near the Al-Aqsa Mosque. PA radio host Rim Al-Daudi interviews Dr. Jamal Amer, expert on Jerusalem and lecturer on urban planning at Bir Zeit University.
PA radio host Rim Al-Daudi: “Israel would like to create its artificial history in the Old City of Jerusalem. It failed to find any Jewish history in Jerusalem, so it seeks to invent an artificial Jewish history under the foundations of the Old City. The Israelis are frightened and frustrated because the Zionist enterprise… collapses when it confronts historical facts that ‘the land speaks Arabic.’ This is a city that speaks Arabic: Its stones, its history, its past and its present, and also its architecture, its buildings… They all speak Arabic...
Jamal Amer: “They are the world’s masters of counterfeit. They are the strongest and most preferred among those who managed to fabricate history. They fabricated the Torah itself, and now they’re planting their forgeries in Palestinian earth, while everyone knows that their own researchers say that ‘We don’t have any Temple here,’ and at the Hebrew University they entirely admit that their excavations have led to nothing… So all they have is one ruse, with which they laugh at the whole world: They take a known Islamic shape – the six-sided star – from Islamic architecture, but [the prophet] Daud (i.e., David), may he rest in peace, saw it on Islamic construction and on what Palestinians had built, and he liked it and he took it and put it on his iron shield… They took this shape and thought of it as their own, and this is yet another forgery of history.
But, assuming that it became theirs, what did they do? They didn’t find it in Jerusalem, so they went to a few places and planted this star and carved it into stones with their own hands.”
Israel destroys Muslim artifacts and forges Jewish history in Jerusalem
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Sept. 11, 2012
“The Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places warned yesterday that occupation authorities are destroying historical relics from the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphate periods. It added that the entrance to (the) Silwan (neighborhood), where antiquities have been destroyed recently, is just one of scores of sites being torn asunder by occupation authority bulldozers during excavation and destruction, in order to prove Zionism’s bogus claims on Jerusalem, and implement their schemes to build the alleged Temple on the ruins of Islamic culture. In addition, the Council warned of the occupation authority’s claims that evidence has been uncovered demonstrating a Jewish and Talmudic right to these sites. The Council called on the international community and all institutions concerned with heritage to intercede immediately and show the whole world that Israel’s claims are a sham. The Council called for groups with expertise in the field of antiquities, to come and examine the finds, and thus protect ancient culture and artifacts all of whose remains are now under the threat of Judaization and destruction. Within the same context, the Council denounced Israel’s bogus claims that a large water basin has been discovered west of the Al-Aqsa mosque, dating to the period of the alleged First Temple, and it declared that these claims are fabricated. The Secretary General of the Council, Dr. Hanna Issa, declared that Israel has crossed all red lines in Jerusalem, and has not left a single site or archeological artifact that it has not assailed through destruction and forgery.”
PA daily: Al-Aqsa Institute claims Israel may destroy Islamic artifacts and falsify archaeological facts
Source: Al-Ayyam, Sept. 9, 2012
Headline: "Al-Aqsa Institute: The occupation has discovered Umayyad and Abbasid antiquities"
"The Al-Aqsa Institute for Religious Trusts and Heritage has warned that the occupation will destroy historical artifacts from the period of the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphs that were discovered a few days ago at the entrance to the Wadi Hilweh – Silwan neighborhoods, a few meters south of the Al-Aqsa Mosque… It should be noted that during its excavations at the site a few days ago, the so-called 'Israeli Antiquities Authority' discovered historical artifacts belonging to the Umayyad and Abbasid period, and a (City of David tour) guide claimed that most of the archaeological finds in the area are from the period of , or from the Roman and Byzantine periods. From its research and earlier visits at the site, the Al-Aqsa Institute has concluded that all the antiquities found in the entire area or in most of it belong to the Islamic period, which began with the Umayyad period and ended with the Ottoman period… The Al-Aqsa Institute expressed concern that the occupation might try to destroy the archaeological findings from the Umayyad and Abbasid period, or at least falsify historical and archaeological facts. This would be aimed at adapting them to the Zionist and Talmudic-biblical view and an attempt to claim that this site and its surroundings have a Hebrew history."
PA official: Israel steals Palestinian heritage, including Palestinian dress
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 12, 2012
"Minister of Culture Siham Barghouti, and District Governor of Jenin, Talal Dweikat,… opened the fourth Al-Zababdeh Festival of Culture, Art and Tourism, with many residents of Al-Zababdeh and the nearby towns and villages attending… Dweikat stressed the importance of this cultural activity, and said that holding festivals in the [outlying] districts, villages and towns is Palestinian proof of our people's adherence to its national heritage. He also said that while Israel has occupied Palestine and parts of Arab countries, it has not succeeded in achieving its goals, and has therefore attempted, throughout the years of the occupation, to steal the components of Palestinian heritage. Recently it [Israel] announced that Mount Gerizim (Samaritan/Jewish holy site near Nablus) is part of the Israeli heritage, and it attempts unceasingly to steal the [traditional] Palestinian dress."
