Jerusalem under assault
In 2009 the Palestinian Authority has initiated an unprecedented campaign of historical revision and anti-Israel libels concerning Jerusalem, the focal point being the erasure and denial of 3,000 years of Jewish history in Jerusalem.

In addition, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel is acting both to expel Arabs from Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jerusalem libels are designed to evoke religious hatred by portraying Israel and the Jews as a threat to Arabs and Islam.

This section documents the recent intensification of the Palestinian Authority's campaign of distortion, historical revision and hate incitement surrounding Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is "land of Ribat" - holy Islamic land
The Palestinian Authority has adopted the Hamas ideology of framing the conflict with Israel as a religious war for Allah. Jerusalem and all of Israel are defined as "Ribat" - holy Islamic land - whose "liberation" and defense are said to be mandatory under Islamic law. The significance of the PA defining the conflict as “Ribat” is clear when reading how a PA schoolbook defines “Ribat":

"The Ribat for Allah is one of the actions related to Jihad ...The persistence of Palestine's people on their land in these days [i.e., Israel], and their persistence against the damage and the aggression they endure - is one of the greatest of the Ribat [fighting for Islamic land], and they are worthy of a great reward from Allah.... they are found in Ribat until Resurrection." [Islamic Education, grade 12, p. 86-87]

Since 2008, Palestinian leaders have frequently defined all of Israel, and particularly Jerusalem, as land of "Ribat" - i.e., areas which Muslims have a religious obligation to defend and liberate for Islam. In the past, it was specifically Hamas that defined the conflict with Israel as a religious war. Now, the PA - Fatah leadership regularly presents its war against Israel as a religious battle for Islam.
Fatah youth movement calls for “widening confrontations with the occupation,” if Jerusalem is “harmed” – “it means opening the gates of hell before the occupiers”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 27, 2017
Headline: "The Shabiba calls for widespread participation in a Friday of Ribat as a sign of support for Jerusalem"
"The Fatah Shabiba [youth] movement in the West Bank published a statement in which it saluted 'the resolve and Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) of the members of our people, its women, young, elderly, national forces, and religious institutions in Jerusalem, which are currently proudly defending the Arabness of Jerusalem, the Islamicness of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the honor of the Arab nation and the Islamic nation.' The Shabiba movement also appreciated the position of [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership, their latest decisions regarding Jerusalem, including stopping all types of contact with the occupation, and their call to the members of our people to carry out Ribat in order to defend the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque. It also admired the position of the Palestinian leadership to aid the resolve of the Palestinian citizens in Jerusalem. Fatah's Shabiba demanded that its sons, activists, and supporters, and all of the young Palestinians widely participate in a Friday of Ribat, to widen the circle of the confrontation with the occupation forces and the herds of settlers, to open all the fronts in the villages, cities, and refugee camps, and to widen the area of confrontation so that it will include all of the settlements and roads that serve them, in order to convey the message of the young Palestinians that Jerusalem is a Palestinian taboo, and that harming it means opening the gates of hell before the occupiers."

Fatah proud of rioters in Jerusalem, vows to continue “popular resistance”
Source: Donia Al-Watan (independent Palestinian news agency), July 24, 2017
Headline: “Fatah: Jerusalem is our capital, the Al-Aqsa Mosque is our direction of prayer, and the [Fatah] Movement is leading those defending them”

“[Fatah] Movement Spokesman Osama Al-Qawasmi said in a press statement that we in Fatah are proud of our residents and our people who are carrying out Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) in Jerusalem in particular, and also of our mighty Palestinian people everywhere it is located, which in these moments is embodying the most spectacular definition of cohesion, unity, and mutual responsibility, and is defending the sites that are holy to Islam and Christianity and the entire holy city [of Jerusalem]. Fatah will continue to be on the ground and leading those defending our capital and our Al-Aqsa Mosque as part of the popular resistance (i.e., term used by Palestinians, which also refers to the use of violence and terror) that it has adopted and leads.”

The terms "peaceful uprising/resistance,” and “popular uprising/resistance" are used by PA leaders at times to refer to peaceful protest and at times to refer to deadly terror attacks and terror waves. For example, ‎Mahmoud Abbas defined as “peaceful popular” the murderous terror during the 2015-2016 ‎terror wave (“The Knife Intifada”), in which 40 people were killed (36 Israelis, 1 Palestinian, 2 Americans and 1 Eritrean) and hundreds wounded by stabbings, shootings and car ramming attacks: Abbas said: "we want peaceful popular uprising, and that’s what this is." http://palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=16437

Abbas’ religious advisor claims Israeli security measures on Temple Mount “constitute aggression against religious and political rights of Muslims”; Fatah claims Israel planning to “empty Jerusalem” of Palestinians
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 20, 2017
Headline: “Friday is a day of general high-alert and prayers will not take place except at the Al-Aqsa Mosque”

“Supreme Shari’ah Judge and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash called on the international community to act before it will be too late to prevent the deterioration of the situation in the Middle East and the world because of the continuation of the racist Israeli attacks against the Al-Aqsa Mosque (Israel placed metal detectors at its entrances after a terror attack in which 2 Israelis were murdered took place there on July 14, 2017; see note below –Ed.).
The supreme Shari’ah judge emphasized that the responsibility for the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the sole right of Muslims, and that the Israeli interference in Al-Aqsa Mosque affairs constitutes aggression against the religious and political rights of the Muslims.

The Fatah Movement yesterday [July 19, 2017] again emphasized its absolute opposition to the Israeli steps of aggression in occupied Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Fatah Revolutionary Council member [and Official Fatah Movement Spokesman] Osama Al-Qawasmi said in a press statement that Fatah will not agree to the implementation of the Israeli plan to empty the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy city [of Jerusalem] of its original inhabitants, the members of the Palestinian people.
Al-Qawasmi added: ‘We and all the members of our people that carries out Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) condemn the illegal steps of the occupation authorities, and also oppose entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque through metal detectors.’”

Fatah declares “day of rage” in response to metal detectors on the Temple Mount
Source: Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, July 17, 2017
Headline: “Fatah called for a day of rage on Wednesday and for mass movement towards the Al-Aqsa Mosque”

“The Fatah Movement has announced several actions in the northern [West Bank] branches in light of the Israeli escalation against the Al-Aqsa Mosque (refers to metal detectors being placed at the entrance to the Temple Mount following a terror attack there on July 14, 2017; see note below –Ed.), the most significant of which is a day of rage this Wednesday [July 19, 2017] at all of the branches, and a call for mass movement towards the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In coordination with the [PA] Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Friday prayer will be held this week in the public plazas of the Palestinian cities, and every branch will define its plan to support the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy sites against the Israeli occupation’s acts of terror, until the occupation retracts its steps against the mosque.
These statements were made during a meeting held today [July 17, 2017] between Fatah Movement Secretary and [Fatah] Revolutionary Council member Adnan Ghaith, Fatah Movement Central Committee member and [Fatah] General Commissioner of Mobilization and Organization [in the West Bank] Dr. Jamal Muhaisen, and all of the secretaries of the Fatah Movement’s northern branches…
At the end of the meeting, the branch secretaries saluted all of the [Arab] residents of Jerusalem who are carrying out Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) in the city, and said that Jerusalem’s cause is every Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian’s cause, and that this is expressed by conveying the Palestinian people’s willpower for widespread action in light of what is happening in Jerusalem and to rise up for it.”

Fatah Facebook rebroadcasts Abbas' call to prevent Jews "in any way" from “defiling our holy places,” following terror attack on the Temple Mount

Text and video posted on the official Fatah Facebook page

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas: “It's not enough for us to say: ‘There are those carrying out Ribat’ (religious conflict / war over land claimed to be Islamic). We must all carry out Ribat in the Al-Aqsa [Mosque]. It's not enough for us to say: ‘The settlers have arrived [at the Mosque]’. They have come, and they must not come to the Sanctuary (i.e., Temple Mount). We have to prevent them, in any way whatsoever, from entering the Sanctuary. This is our Sanctuary, our Al-Aqsa and our Church [of the Holy Sepulchre]. They have no right to enter it. They have no right to defile it. We must prevent them. Let us stand before them with chests bared to protect our holy places.”

Dean of Islamic schools calls on Muslims to carry out Ribat at the Al-Aqsa Mosque
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, July 15, 2017
Official PA TV program Inside, on the closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque for two days after a terror attack was committed there on July 14, 2017, in which 2 Israelis were murdered; hosting Dean of the Al-Azhar Institutes in Palestine Sheikh Imad Hamato

Dean of the Al-Azhar Institutes in Palestine and host of weekly PA TV show in Islam Sheikh Imad Hamato: "We [the Palestinians] are people that do not know our history correctly. We have a deed of ownership from Allah for the Al-Aqsa Mosque. We have a deed of ownership from our lord, Allah’s Messenger [Muhammad]…
We must all be at the Al-Aqsa Mosque [expressing our full] emotions, this is a call over those good radio waves, that every Muslim should reexamine his faith. We fear that Allah will examine our hearts and find that we are mired in emotions that will not please Him. Every Muslim must fulfill the obligatory commandment to assist the Al-Aqsa Mosque. It is not enough that you say that your identity is Muslim, and it is not enough that you say that your identity is Christian. You must ask forgiveness of Allah and carry out the commandment of Ribat at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, around this mosque taken hostage."

PA Mufti denies Jews’ right to the Western Wall: Al-Aqsa and Jerusalem are ours, all four of walls around it are part of Al-Aqsa
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, June 24, 2017
Headline: “150,000 worshippers held the [last] Friday prayer of Ramadan at the Al-Aqsa Mosque plazas”

“[PA] Mufti of Jerusalem and preacher at the Al-Aqsa Mosque Muhammad Hussein, on the last Friday of the blessed [Muslim fasting] month of Ramadan, conveyed a message from Saladin [Al-Ayyubi’s] pulpit to the world that we are holding onto the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, because it is a principle of [our] faith and a place of worship, and we will continue to carry out Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) there and visit it.
He emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem are ours and that all four of the walls around it, including the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount), are part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

The Al-Buraq Wall - Islam's Prophet Muhammad is said to have rode during his Night Journey from Mecca to "al aqsa mosque", i.e., "the farthest mosque" (Quran, Sura 17), and there tied his miraculous flying steed named Al-Buraq to a "stone" or a "rock." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Book 47, Hadith 3424). In the 1920's, Arab Mufti Haj Amin Al-Husseini decided to identify the Western Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem as that "rock" or "stone," and since then Muslims refer to the Western Wall as the "Al-Buraq Wall."

PA official encourages disorder: Palestinians must prepare for “comprehensive national rebellion” against Israel
Source: Donia Al-Watan (independent Palestinian news agency), June 7, 2017
Headline: “Khaled called to abandon the illusions and change the rules of confrontation against the occupation”

“In a social media post, PLO Executive Committee member and Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) political bureau member Tayseer Khaled called to break free of the chains of the agreements and the occupation by changing the rules of confrontation against the occupation government’s policy.
He added: ‘We have no choice but to change the rules of confrontation against the policy of the occupation government led by [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu and to start preparing for a comprehensive national rebellion against the occupation, given that it is the main political option for breaking free of the occupation and earning independence.’”

PA minister calls people to come to Al-Aqsa for “constant Ribat” – continued religious conflict
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, June 4, 2017
Headline: “Ida’is: Over 100 Israeli violations against the places of worship in May 2017”

“[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida’is said… ‘The facts on the ground show that the occupation and its settlers are making concentrated attempts to empty the Al-Aqsa Mosque of its people, in light of the attacks and arrests of the men and women carrying out Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic).’ He again emphasized his call to ‘come and carry out constant Ribat at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs), which suffers exactly like the Al-Aqsa Mosque, as the occupation has forbidden the sounding of the call of the Muezzin (i.e., the person who sings the Muslim call to prayer) there 61 times.’”

The PA and its leaders consider all of the Temple Mount an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Therefore they view any presence of Jews on the mount as an “attack.” It should be noted that Jews who visit the Temple Mount only enter some sections of the open areas, and do not enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock.

During a meeting on peace at the World Economic Forum that is being held now at Sweimeh on the Dead Sea coast, west of Amman, Erekat added: ‘We think that transferring the American embassy to Jerusalem constitutes the end of the peace process.’
He added: ‘What we mean is that as far as the Palestinians are concerned, a state whose capital is not East Jerusalem is meaningless.’”

[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida’is condemned the fact that the occupation forces are sowing fear in the hearts of the [Palestinian] civilians and [condemned ] their racist acts, and said: ‘This mosque will remain the beating heart of Hebron, one of the most important and prominent symbols of our Islamic nation. It will be only ours, Palestinians’ and Muslims’, and the Jews have no right to it.’
[PA] Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories and [Palestinian] Supreme Fatwa Council Chairman Sheikh Muhammad Hussein… praised those carrying out Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) in Jerusalem and at the Ibrahimi Mosque, and mentioned the attack against the buildings and plazas of the destination of the Night Journey of [Allah’s] Messenger (i.e., the Al-Aqsa Mosque), blessings and peace be upon him, as well as against those visiting it. In the Friday sermon the grand mufti also reviewed the aggression and violations against the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which are being committed before the eyes and ears of the world. PA Mufti threatens "severe complications" if US embassy is moved to Jerusalem
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Jan. 20, 2017
PA Mufti Muhammad Hussein: “We say in light of the things that Jerusalem is suffering from, such as declarations and plans, like the plans of US President [Donald Trump] who promised during his election campaign to transfer the American embassy to Jerusalem... We must say that keeping this promise holds great dangers and a concern of severe complications that only Allah knows where they will lead. How can the Palestinian people, which has made many sacrifices, which has sacrificed processions of Martyrs (Shahids) one after the other, and which has given for the goal thousands of prisoners, the students of freedom who defend the fundamentals of the noble people, our people who is engaged in Jihad and Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic), our people and our leadership and all members of our people will not be silent if this promise is kept and the American president transfers the embassy to Jerusalem. We say to the American president and to the entire world, Jerusalem has a people, and it has residents, and it has a nation [that will stand by it]. Even if there are people who will not take the appropriate position regarding Jerusalem, all of the Arab and Islamic peoples will in no way agree to Jerusalem being harmed…"

Fatah: US embassy move "will open the gates of hell"

“The Fatah Movement said that if the American embassy is transferred to East Jerusalem (a Jerusalem location for the embassy has not yet been specified –Ed.), the gates of hell will open in the region and in the world. It added that this will prevent any chance of peace and stability in the region.
Fatah Revolutionary Council member and spokesman Osama Al-Qawasmi emphasized on Saturday evening [Jan. 14, 2017] in a press statement that East Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian state according to the law, the international institutions, and the UN resolutions regarding our issue, the last of which was [UN Security Council] Resolution 2334.
Al-Qawasmi emphasized that Fatah, the Palestinian people, and all free people in the world will not allow this step to pass. Erekat said that he passed the message from President Abbas to Putin during a visit to Moscow during which he met with [Russian] Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Erekat said: ‘I passed a letter from President Abbas to Putin. Frankly, in it was a request for aid from Putin, after information reached us according to which US President-elect (Donald) Trump will transfer the embassy to Jerusalem, which as far as we are concerned is considered a red line and a serious matter…’

Fatah official: US embassy move will be "a sign of the end of the world"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 12, 2017
Headline: "Zaki: Transferring the American embassy to Jerusalem will absolve us of all the agreements and turn Palestine into a war zone"
"Fatah Central Committee member Abbas Zaki emphasized that the Palestinian leadership will not allow the transfer of the American embassy, and will be absolved of the previous decisions and agreements. He also warned against turning Palestine into a war zone if the new American administration decides to transfer it.
Zaki said today, Wednesday [Jan. 11, 2017], in an interview with Radio Mawtini: 'The transfer of the American embassy to Jerusalem will be a sign of the end of the world.' He added: 'The attack against the place of [Prophet] Muhammad’s Ascent to Heaven and Jesus' resurrection contradicts the religious and international understandings,' and he warned against the terrible dangers whose course cannot be predicted. Zaki emphasized that no power in the world can prevent the Palestinians, Muslims, and Christians as one from carrying out their national obligation to defend their occupied capital, and said: 'There is no Palestinian state without Jerusalem.'
Zaki said that he is convinced that the statements of US President-elect [Donald] Trump that were used during the election campaign cannot be implemented on the ground in Palestine and noted that this trend appeared in the 1960s when [former Israeli Prime Minister David] Ben-Gurion proposed it in order to establish the occupation state in Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque in order to establish the alleged Temple."

Abbas’ advisor on religious affairs: If the US moves its embassy to Jerusalem it is “a declaration of war on all Muslims”
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Jan. 6, 2017

Official PA TV, Friday sermon by Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash, in the presence of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas

Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash:  "The new American administration intends to transfer its embassy to Jerusalem. In a simple, calm, and rational manner, in clear words that need no explanation and which are unambiguous: Such a step, for every Muslim, is a declaration of war on all Muslims. It's a declaration of war on all Muslims. We are no one's enemies, and we do not want to be. We are not enemies of the US and we do not want to be. However, when something harms our faith and our existence, we cannot stand by and do nothing. We will not agree to this under any circumstances. This will not pass in silence... The entire Muslim world will not accept it, and the entire Christian world will not accept it. Occupied Jerusalem is our eternal capital, the capital of our existence and the capital of our state. In politics there can be compromises here and there... In politics there can be negotiation. However, in matters of religion, faith, values, ethics, and history, there can be no compromises. Therefore, it isn't possible to compromise on or negotiate over Jerusalem. This of course does not mean that we will prevent anyone from considering Jerusalem their direction of prayer. Our Jerusalem will remain open to all believers as it has been. Open to all of the monotheists."
