PLO Commission of Prisoners: 40 Palestinians serving over 20 years in Israeli prisons

“According to a report published by the [PLO] Commission of Prisoners and Released Prisoners' Affairs, 40 prisoners are serving more than 20 years in the occupation’s prisons, the veterans among them being Karim Younes and Maher Younes, who have served 34 consecutive years in the occupation’s prisons, and Nael Barghouti who served 35 years and was rearrested after being released in the Shalit [prisoner exchange] deal.”

Karim Younes - an Israeli Arab serving a 40-year sentence for kidnapping and killing Israeli soldier Avraham Bromberg in 1980 together with his cousin Maher Younes. Originally sentenced to life in prison, but Israeli President Shimon Peres reduced his sentence in 2012.

Nael and Fakhri Barghouti were part of a Fatah squad who kidnapped and killed an Israeli officer in 1978. They are serving life sentences for this killing.

In October 2011, the Israeli government agreed to release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prison in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held hostage by Hamas for more than 5 years.
