One of the outstanding operations (i.e., terror attacks) of the Black September [organization]
Oct. 29, 1972
The Black September organization carried out a hijacking operation on a German Lufthansa plane. The operation was planned by Salah Khalaf ‘Abu Iyad’ and Ali Hassan Salameh, and self-sacrificing fighter (Fida’iya) Amna Awad carried it out successfully (together with an accomplice –Ed.), and the plane was brought to Yugoslavia. The self-sacrificing fighters demanded that the government of Germany release the three self-sacrificing fighters who were arrested during the Munich operation (i.e., the Munich Massacre, 11 murdered), the German government agreed to the demand, and the three self-sacrificing fighters led by Abu Daoud (i.e., Muhammad Daoud Oudeh) were released.”

Black September hijacking of Lufthansa jet – On Oct. 29, 1972, two members of the Palestinian terrorist organization Black September hijacked a German Lufthansa jet as it left Beirut for Frankfurt. In exchange for the release of the passengers and crew, the terrorists demanded the release of three Black September terrorists who were arrested by Germany less than two months earlier during the Munich Massacre, in which Black September terrorists murdered 11 members of the Israeli Olympic Team during the 1972 Summer Olympics. The German government agreed to their demands within hours without consulting Israel, and released the three terrorists. In response to the surprising release, Israel launched “Operation Wrath of God” to track down and assassinate all terrorists involved in the Munich Massacre. Two of the three released Black September terrorists from the Lufthansa exchange deal were later killed by Mossad agents, while the third, Jamal Al-Gashey, survived. Al-Gashey gave testimony in the 1990s to the producers of the Oscar-winning documentary film “One Day in September,” in which he revealed that the German government had made a deal in advance with Black September, allowing it to hijack the Lufthansa jet as a pretext to release the three jailed terrorists because it wanted to free them fearing Palestinian retaliation. While Willy Brandt, who served as West German Chancellor at the time of the hijacking and signed the exchange deal, denied Al-Gashey’s statements, the terrorist’s testimony was backed by senior German, Palestinian, and Israeli sources.

Abu Iyad (Salah Khalaf) - Founder of Fatah and head of the terrorist organization Black September. Attacks he planned included the murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics (Sept. 5, 1972) and the murder of two American diplomats in Sudan (March 1, 1973).

Ali Hassan Salameh - Commander of operations of the Black September terror group. He planned many terror attacks, including the attack on the Israeli team at the Munich Olympics in 1972, in which 11 Israeli athletes were murdered.

The Munich Massacre
- a terrorist attack perpetrated by the Palestinian terror organization Black September during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, in which they murdered 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team.

Muhammad Daoud Oudeh - Member of Black September, mastermind of Munich Olympics hostage-taking and resulting killing of 11 Israeli athletes in 1972
