Palestinian kids tell Pope: Jesus was the first Palestinian refugee
“The children of the Deheisheh refugee camp in the Bethlehem district called on Pope Francis, during his visit (May 2014) to the Al-Finiq Center in the refugee camp, to intervene to put an end to the suffering of the prisoners who have been hunger-striking for over a month, and the suffering of our people in the Yarmouk refugee camp [in Syria].
The following was said in a speech read out by one of the children in the presence of the Pope: ‘Despite the pain and the suffering caused by the occupation, we have not lost hope of living in peace at the present time, when we mark the 66th anniversary of the Nakba (i.e., ‘the catastrophe,’ Palestinian term for the establishment of the State of Israel) which was the most heinous war of ethnic cleansing in history. The continuation of the occupation is a crime against humanity, and our dream is to live in peace and freedom.’ The children gave His Holiness the Pope a food stamp in the name of Jesus, since he was the first refugee, and a wooden souvenir with a key symbolizing the right of return.”
