Secretary of Fatah in Jerusalem Shadi Mattour: “We in the Fatah Movement and in all the echelons of the Movement and the leadership have said that this [American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital] is a declaration of war. It’s the collapse of the peace process. This will blow up the street. The Fatah Movement has begun a chain of meetings with all of the leaders on the ground in the regional branches, the [Fatah] Shabiba [Movement], and all of its offices. The issue of Jerusalem is a central issue for all of the Muslims, all of the Arabs, and all of the free people in the world. Whoever wants to play with fire in Jerusalem will bear the consequences of this [American] decision and will deal with the transfer of the American embassy to the holy city [of Jerusalem]. We believed in politics and believed in peace, but we see now that peace is killing our dream of establishing our state, and that the world recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of the occupation state. [Therefore,] we will deny politics and peace and we will return. We are prepared for the return. The leadership has said that we are prepared for the return to the prisons and arenas of Martyrdom-death (Shahada). This is an honor for us.”
US recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel - On Dec. 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and instructed the State Department to begin preparations to transfer the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Trump added that the final borders of Jerusalem will be determined during negotiations.
