PA Minister of Religious Affairs warns that Muezzin Law is "liable to lead to a religious war that will burn the whole region"

"[PA] Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories and blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque preacher Sheikh Muhammad Hussein condemned what is called the Muezzin Law, which was approved by the Israeli occupation authorities in a first reading [in the Israeli Parliament].
He said in a statement from the Dar Al-Ifta (lit. house of religious ruling – the Jerusalem Mufti’s office –Ed.) today, Thursday [March 9, 2017], that the attack against the mosques comes as part of a planned policy. He explained that the mosques in all of Palestine, and particularly in Jerusalem, are being subjected to a fierce attack by the occupation authorities as part of the extremism they use to harm the holy sites. This is so, whether by ongoing attacks against them or by burning them, destroying them, or closing them with false excuses…
[PA Minister of Religious Affairs Yusuf] Ida’is demanded that the international community, with its states, governments, bodies, and relative organizations, intervene to stop these attacks against the mosques, and particularly the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque… He also described this decision as racist and held the occupation authorities responsible for the consequences that are liable to lead to a religious war that will burn the whole region."
On Feb. 12, 2017, a bill to ban religious institutions from broadcasting over loudspeakers between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. was authorized by the Israeli Ministerial Committee for Legislation and is now pending parliamentary approval. The bill is intended to prevent noise pollution and is referred to by many as the "Muezzin Law," although it does not apply to any specific religion.
Other countries have already approved or attempted legislation for regulating the use of loudspeakers in mosques in order to limit noise pollution. These include India, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Bahrain, the United Emirates, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France, the UK, Austria, Norway, and Belgium, and the US. The PA has also passed legislation regarding the use of loudspeakers in mosques in order to reduce noise pollution.
