PA Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns security measures on the Temple Mount following terror attack, praises riots; Abbas’ advisor warns about deteriorating situation

“The [PA] Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned all of the steps and measures that the occupation authorities are taking against the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque… whose goal is to put the status quo at the Al-Aqsa Mosque up for negotiation and to create a new reality, through which different issues of Israeli sovereignty will be forced on the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque (refers to Israel placing metal detectors at the entrances to the Temple Mount following a terror attack there on July 14, 2017, in which 2 Israelis were murdered; see note below –Ed.)…
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said that the members of our people, and especially in Jerusalem, have succeeded in thwarting the aggressive and dangerous Israeli plan through their uprising, and that they are waging the battle on behalf of the Arab world and the Islamic world… The ministry emphasized that the current battle over the Al-Aqsa Mosque is a crucial battle by any standards, and that it will have consequences for all sides. Therefore, the ministry calls on the leaders and peoples to take this battle seriously…
Supreme Shari’ah Judge and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash demanded that the UN and [UN] Security Council intervene urgently in order to stop the Israeli escalation, before the situation deteriorates further and reaches the point of no return. In a press statement, Al-Habbash added that the metal detectors that the occupation authorities placed are the reason for the current Palestinian popular rage, and that there is no alternative to their removal. This is because the Palestinian people and its religious and political leaders oppose them unanimously, and they must be removed at any price.”
