PLO Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs Director Karake alleges Israel of “state terror” against hunger striking Palestinian prisoners

“Director of [PLO] Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Karake said that the [hunger] striking prisoners are being subjected to a Nakba (i.e., catastrophe,” see note below) that is meant to destroy their humanity, and a deliberate policy of slow death is being implemented against them as part of an official Israeli decision…
Karake noted that our people is in a state of emergency in light of the dangers and threats placed before the [hunger] striking prisoners. He accused the occupation government of carrying out organized state terror against the prisoners and their legal and just rights.”
Note: The term Nakba, meaning “catastrophe,” is generally used by Palestinians for the establishment of the State of Israel. In his statement above, Karake seems to have intended “catastrophe” in a broader sense.
Palestinians commemorate Nakba Day on May 15, the day after the establishment of Israel. On May 15, 1948, combined forces from Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq joined local Arab forces in an attempt to eradicate the newly established State of Israel. The Nakba refers to the establishment of Israel, and the subsequent loss of the war, including the killing and displacement of Arab civilians that occurred during the war.
Palestinian terrorist prisoners launched a hunger strike on April 17, 2017, which ended on May 27, 2017, after an agreement was reached. While the prisoners had issued a list of demands, reportedly only the demand to have the Red Cross reinstate a second monthly family visit for prisoners was agreed to. Nevertheless, the PA has claimed the development as a victory.
