Growing Jerusalem unrest
sparks fears of a third intifada

The interrogation of hundreds of Palestinian rioters in Jerusalem suggest the beginning of a well-organized, semi-funded third intifada • In the background, Fatah and Hamas are present • Abbas talks peace while Fatah officials incited to murder Jews.

While Hamas operates for the most part underground, Fatah is out in the open. Its spokespeople hold gatherings with Palestinians in the West Bank as well as in east Jerusalem. They also use the PA's official media organs, as documented by the watchdog Palestinian Media Watch.

The public statements made recently by senior Fatah officials teach us that the language and terminology used by the organization in addressing local Palestinians has changed. Fatah and Hamas are trying to outdo each other in disseminating hatred of Jews and Israel, even while Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas speaks of reconciliation and nonviolence.

Abbas, who also heads Fatah, is not ashamed of this hypocrisy. Abbas Zaki, a senior Fatah official, says that he doesn't want the PA to join the International Criminal Court in The Hague because if Palestinians shoot at Israelis in the future, they could find themselves on the docket.

Jibril Rajoub says that Palestinian ties with Israel are akin to "relations between enemies." "Do I stop anyone from slaughtering a settlement?" Rajoub rhetorically asked an interviewer. "Nobody's stopping anyone."

Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the PLO's Executive Committee, leveled criticism at U.S. President Barack Obama because, in her words, he recognizes Jewish historical links to the land of Israel. According to Ashrawi, speaking of "the return of Jews to their land is part of the Zionist ideological discourse."

On Palestinian television, comparisons are drawn between bombarding 12-story buildings in Gaza from which Hamas terrorists operated and the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Abbas himself, by means of a presidential decree, transformed the Prisoner Affairs Ministry in the PA into the PLO's Prisoner Affairs Authority. This little trick enables the PA to continue using American and European aid money to pay the salaries of terrorists jailed in Israel.
