Istiqama host: “Hello to our viewers of Guests of Oman. Our guest today is from the State of Palestine, doctor and author Adham Sharqawi...

You are of Palestinian origin but live in Lebanon. Tell me, where did you grow up?”

Lebanese author Adham Sharqawi: “My father and I were born in Lebanon. You know the story of the Palestinian Nakba (i.e., “the catastrophe,” the Palestinian term for the establishment of the State of Israel) from 1948 due to which they migrated to the Arab states… My grandfather settled in southern Lebanon in the city of Tyre and gave birth to my father, and my father gave birth to me. We have never visited Palestine…”

Host: “Do you ascribe what happened to Palestine to more than a plot? Was there a conspiracy of those who were in charge of the Palestinian cause and the Arab issues?”

Adham Sharqawi: “First of all, it was a decree of fate. When Allah revealed [to Muhammad] Sura 17 [of the Quran], he decreed that these Jews would come to Palestine, and Allah would gather them together for them to be killed and slaughtered (refers to well-known modern interpretation of Sura 17:104; see note below –Ed.). That is our belief…

Secondly, there was European support for [the migration of] Jews for two reasons. The first reason is they wanted to get rid of the Jews because they made trouble for them regardless of where they were, as was the case in Medina in the period of Muhammad. They were greedy and wanted to gather wealth. [Adolf] Hitler – I do not agree with Hitler, but for the purpose of explanation, some of Hitler’s attitude against the Jews did not stem from an Islamic background, but rather because they attempted to enslave the German people.”

Host: “Apparently he had personal experience.”

Adham Sharqawi: “He had personal experience, but that is because they controlled the wealth, they controlled the media. His personal life story had an influence on the shaping of his opinions, but if it would have only stemmed from his personal experience, most of the people would not have adopted these opinions. The Europeans had two reasons [to support the migration of the Jews]. The first reason was because they wanted to get rid of the Jews. A second reason was they believed – like [US President Donald] Trump and the neo-conservatives – that Jesus will not come until the Jews reach Palestine and build the Temple.”

The reference to Sura 17 of the Quran meaning that the Jews will be gathered in Israel in order to be slaughtered is based on a well-known modern interpretation of Sura 17:104. This interpretation stands in contrast to that of most other commentators, who view the line as referring to the resurrection of the dead when the Jews will be gathered together with the rest of the people. The verse reads: “And We said after Pharaoh to the Children of Israel, ‘Dwell in the land, and when there comes the promise of the Hereafter, We will bring you forth in [one] gathering.’” (Quran, Sura 17:104, Sahih International translation)
