Head of BDS: Point of movement is to weaken Israeli economy and isolate Israel

National Committee for the Boycott of Israel founding member, Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel founding member, and co-founder of the BDS movement Omar Barghouti: “The movement of boycotting Israel, divesting from it, and sanctioning it – BDS – was begun in 2005 by the overwhelming majority of the Palestinian society. We created it such that is has almost complete Palestinian agreement about it.”
Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel member Haidar Eid: “Nearly all the sectors of the Palestinian civil society and a representative of the national and Islamic council are represented on the National Committee for the Boycott [of Israel] Secretariat. There are also representatives from the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.”

Omar Barghouti: “What is the idea in leading this global movement? It is a non-hierarchical and decentralized movement. It is a type of very wide coalition around the world, but the Palestinian National Committee sets the general foundations and basic principles, and decides what the rights that we are striving to achieve are…
The goal of the economic boycott is not to subdue the entire Israeli economy, because that is not realistic. The goal is to weaken the Israeli economy enough so that the international corporations will start to cancel their investments and cancel their projects in this economy.”
Coordinator of the Popular Campaign to Boycott the Settlement and the Wall Jamal Jum’a: “On the economic level, we do not anticipate that Israel will collapse within a few years, but [the boycott] also lays the foundations for international economic isolation of the occupation entity.”
National Committee for the Boycott of Israel Secretariat member Salah Al-Khawaja: “The economic issue is one of the greatest ways and greatest weapons on which the occupation government relies. If we destabilize them, objectively we will destabilize the foundational structure on which the Zionist existence, the Zionist movement, the occupation government, and the settlers in the Palestinian territories are based.”
General Coordinator of the National Committee for the Boycott of Israel Mahmoud Nawaj’a: “There is pressure that is coming from all directions. All of these tactics are working together to isolate the Israeli settlement regime of apartheid and colonialism. As a result, this regime will collapse.”
