Fatah and PA officials “applaud” the Shalit deal and the release of Palestinian prisoners
In October 2011, the Israeli government agreed to release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prison in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held hostage by Hamas for more than 5 years.

"Factions, forces, public figures, national leaders and non-governmental institutions applauded the conclusion of an agreement for the release of prisoners and committed themselves to continue the struggle to liberate the thousands of prisoners who were not included in the deal.

He emphasized the commitment of the Fatah movement and the leadership to continue the struggle and to act for the release of all our heroic prisoners…
Minister of Prisoners' Affairs, Issa Karake, applauded the conclusion of the agreement since this shortens the duration of the suffering and pain of the prisoners, their families and their children, and because this agreement joins the national achievements of the Palestinian people which fights and acts for the liberation of its sons and daughters from the occupation's prisons.
He said that the conclusion of the agreement does not mean an end to action and activity to liberate the rest of the prisoners, numbering more than 5,000 Palestinian prisoners."
Note: Hundreds of the released prisoners were convicted on charges of murder and terror offenses.
