PA security forces participated in the Intifada

Hafez Al-Barghouti, former Editor-in Chief of the official PA daily:
"It is likely that the wave of criticism being leveled by certain parties against the [PA] security forces is not the ideal way to resist the occupation, since most people active in the resistance came out of those forces, beginning with the Tunnel Intifada in Netanyahu's time in the 90's (1996) up until the [second] Intifada (i.e., the Palestinian terror campaign 2000-2005), during which the security forces bore the brunt of the fighting against the occupation."

Note: “The Tunnel Intifada” refers to 3 days of Palestinian-Israeli fighting in September 1996. When Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu opened a tunnel near the Temple Mount to ease access to and from the Western Wall, Arafat called Palestinians to protest violently.
