"Secretary of the PLO Executive Committee, [Fatah Central Committee member and PLO Chief Negotiator] Saeb Erekat expressed his condemnation of the fact that several political parties in Israel and the US are demanding that the next Palestinian [PA] government recognize Israel. He demanded that [Israel] first recognize the State of Palestine within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as that is the only way to reach a final agreement through which the State of Israel will live alongside the State of Palestine in security and peace…
He added: ‘Since when do [political] parties demand to recognize other states? Recognition is a matter of states and governments, and not of parties, and the truth is that not only has the State of Israel not recognized the State of Palestine, but rather the occupation government is currently destroying the possibility that such a state will exist.’"
