Fatah official explains Abbas condemned terror attack on Temple Mount “to protect Palestinian interests” – not out of sincerity

Excerpt of an op-ed by Muwaffaq Mattar, Fatah Revolutionary Council member and regular columnist for the official PA daily, written in response to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ condemnation of a terror attack committed on the Temple Mount on July 14, 2017, in which 2 Israeli border policemen were murdered
“[PA] President [Mahmoud] Abbas acted wisely and rationally when he expressed his opposition to acts of violence by any side, and particularly those that take place within houses of worship, because the Palestinian people’s interests are in need of his protection as the main one responsible for [protecting them]…
President Mahmoud Abbas was and is the bravest president and leader in the world. He does not worry that he will be condemned (i.e., by Palestinians) when the matter necessitates a clear and explicit position that will protect the people’s interests, because the leadership is interested in pushing back the threats and not drawing them close by taking impulsive positions.
There are those who even viewed the operation (i.e., terror attack, 2 murdered) that the members of the Jabarin family from Umm Al-Fahm (i.e., Israeli Arab terrorists Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad Jabarin, Muhammad Hamed Abd Al-Latif Jabarin, and Muhammad Ahmad Mufaddal Jabarin) carried out two days ago (Friday) [July 14, 2017] at the Al-Aqsa Mosque as an event that will change the face of the region, bring an end to the normalization with Israel by official Arab bodies, and restore the reputation of the path of resistance, and others demanded to establish a joint framework for the armed operations. The popular saying ‘The one whose hand is in the water is not like the one whose hand is in the fire’ applies to such people! (i.e., those criticizing the PA and calling for attacks can do so because they are not in the complex situation the PA is in –Ed.)
The same person who sits in an air-conditioned studio of a satellite [TV] channel and sprays spittle on his crooked tie analyzes matters to his heart’s desire and according to his wish to see blood spilled on the sidewalk with no political return or achievement for the people or homeland. He only cares about the heroic image that he thinks to depict in the minds of his listeners and viewers, and more importantly – how to exploit the incident so that his name will stand out at the expense of the names of those who did it. Perhaps he enjoys reading the headlines on Facebook mere hours after he appeared as the image of the TV ‘man of resistance,’ and he does not care about the amount of tragedies caused as a result of his twisted opinion, which undoubtedly will be heard after each action that is uncalculated in terms of location, time, or the size of the political gain…
With no framework and organization, armed activity will achieve opposite results that are not to the benefit of the public and the cause, and all the more so when these operations come in conjunction with the Israeli occupation authorities’ Judaization plans…
I understand those who believe in the path of peaceful popular resistance and negotiations in order to achieve peace, and who think that there is no benefit in armed activity – not only in the current circumstances, but also in any circumstances in the future. I think that armed operations are only ‘individual initiatives’ of young Palestinians who were overcome by enthusiasm. However, I recognize that the PLO, the legitimate and sole representative [of the Palestinian people], determines the methods, ways, and means of the struggle, and includes them within its political fundamentals. We believe with a firm faith that the PLO has chosen the path of diplomatic and political activity in the international forums so as to create a new legal status for Palestine in international law and establish it as a country on the world map. Therefore, we must analyze the aspects of each armed operation in order to know to what extent it is consistent with these fundamentals or contradicts them.”

Two of the terrorists were shot and killed by other policemen during the attack. The third terrorist was shot and killed while trying to flee.
