Hospital in PA, named after Hugo Chavez, was funded by Venezuela

“[PA] Minister of Health Jawad Awwad and Head of the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR), [Fatah Commissioner of Treasury and Economy, and Fatah Central Committee member] Muhammad Shtayyeh announced yesterday [Sept. 30, 2018] that the Palestinian-Venezuelan Hugo Chavez Eye Disease Hospital will be inaugurated during October… Shtayyeh said that this hospital has been established according to the instructions of [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas, and constitutes a source of Palestinian national pride…
The hospital is named after late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who stood out as one of the statesmen who showed sympathy for our cause and our people. The government of Venezuela contributed the money needed for its construction – $15 million.”
Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias (1954-2013) was President of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013. He endorsed a socialist, anti-Imperialist political ideology. Chavez was a vocal critic of America and Israel, calling Israel worse than Hitler in its treatment of Palestinians. His anti-Zionism and close relations with Iran led to allegations of Antisemitism by the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
